  1. Merde on Large Hadron Collider Struggling · · Score: 0

The biggest, most expensive physics machine in the world is riddled with thousands of bad electrical connections

That would probably be: The French Connections

  2. Re:Cosmic Ray problem on Send the ISS To the Moon · · Score: 0

And while we're at it; what about sending phone sanitizers, PR managers and accountants there too? No-one likes a dirty phone on the Moon either, the project needs to be carefully explained to the public and all the numbers have to match of course.

With a static charge perhaps? The moon dust has a pretty high charge by it self iirc, so a reasonably small same-potential charge on the telescope would repel all particles.

But the fact that they didn't even fire one shot in defense, and that the Dutch commander Karremans literally "offered" the muslim men to the Serbs over a "nice cuppa tea" means they weren't just defeated; they shitted their pants even before any fight began.

"The medals certainly weren't pinned on them in a move by the politicians to save their asses" Of course they were, how else could those politicians have let everyone forget that they sent the men out without adequate equipment and authorization to act.

"Far from trying to save their asses, the whole Dutch government resigned is response to a report about the incident." 1. They didn't 'resign', they didn't survive a motion of disapproval by parliament.
    2. The cabinet had fallen already anyway, so the 'resigning' move was just a hollow gesture.
    3. They never accepted responsibility for the disaster, they just followed political strategy, knowing that they would be in a new government pretty soon anyway,

And guess what? To save their own political ass, politicians gave them all medals afterwards. As Dutch myself, I was ashamed as hell when it happened If it were up to me, I would've put them all against the wall for cowardliness.

That's what I was going to say too. They'll just keep putting off the risky projects, that would probably cause the deaths of astronauts at some point in time. Because death astronauts, and specially American astronauts, is bad for PR, and thus for funding, and thus for the job security of the NASA PHBs. So in 2020 they'll think of yet another project, but that again wouldn't be possible to achieve until 2050 of course. Better to stay in the back garden, blissfully ignorant of what could be out there.

Hey, to each its own. If that's your belief, I hope it brings you peace and happiness. There could even be a hint of truth in your belief, which make it better than many other religions.

TINSFAAL, which is something environmentalists prefer to conveniently forget. Batteries in hybrid cars grow on trees and hydrogen for "zero emission" engines forces itself into fuel-cells.

I can already see a great TV reality show. "Beat the Waves", where contestants have 90 minutes to cross the island, preferably while trying to slow down the others in any way possible. Beer and chips ready, GO.

  12. Service vs working hours? on Gouge Found on Shuttle Endeavour's Underside · · Score: 1

I've seen this argument before on some blog, but: isn't the amount of hours that those people up there spend on servicing and checking for damage getting out of hand? ISTM that we don't hear anything about what it is they do, expect that it involves repairing or replacing something on either the shuttle or the ISS. Do they actually still have time and money to do scientific work or is that just a dish on the side now?
