I disliked ATI for its GL performance. I cried when someone came to me with a Rage Pro and wondered why it didn't get up to par with my G400, which I knew I was crying about because it couldn't beat the NVidia TNT2. *sigh* But... but... ATI is the most supported card in Linux next to S3. If they did release their specs for video capture I may *gasp* go and get one for my mother. I have a video capture card, and a g400. I'd like to combine these into 1 card and free up one IRQ. Actually: Dear Santa, I'd like DVD, video capture, 3d and 2d all in one card. With Linux support. Failing that how about 8 more IRQ's?:)
1) What's up with the rather prejudicial software plugs? Nothing against XFCE or anything (as you'll see), but I noticed a strong bias in the past towards mikmod and x11amp/xmms when there are/were other good software in the GPL arena that do the same things (xmp and gqmpeg being the top two respective examples, IMO).
2) XFCE rocks. I like its simplicity and yet complexity of design. It does what I want it to do, and it has CDE's small footprint. It is not supposed to have the features of GNOME and KDE if it is a CDE alternative, but mind you, there are utilities in Linux you can compile and install, which XFCE will call on if you want. I would not recommend switching from KDE to XFCE if you like a ton of functionality. KDE simply has more features.
3) I do believe that people who use CDE can use this. My mother actually settled on XFCE when I tried to sell her on the idea of Linux on her machine, instead of KDE/kwm, windowmaker, E/GNOME, etc. And if my mudda likes it, you bettah like it!:) (Sadly she finally asked me to put Windows 98 on...sigh)
That remark is on the second page, at http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,32554-2, 00.html:
"There are no collective industry organizations in the United States such as AVLA, which is empowered to collect license fees and disburse them among record companies. Consequently, American DJs have no legal mechanical reproduction rights at all, never mind the right to make MP3s."
WTF is this? You should have the right unless some specific law says you don't. I'd like to know that specific law. My point is if the DJ drops in and plays and mixes mp3's and one of them is pirated, then if someone thinks it's pirated then do an audit. Mic-record what he is playing and then see if he has the actual music purchased on CD or vinyl. It's far simpler than all this 'licensing' crap.
But that's the point..they want to make this into an extortion racket. You buy the music once and then pay again to play it. Bah. I'll just hold my own private parties.
A lot of people take their faith seriously and then when they suddenly one day think it has betrayed them or their grief overwhelms their faith, suicide becomes an option that lands on the table. Like with my aunt, she has been a Baptist all her life but she tried to commit suicide once.
As for your gospel quote, it read more like a she got what she deserved statement, which is very insensitive.
But now I have a question for all you guys who saw this as insensitive. What would happen if Bill Gates died because, say, his doctor was using NT and it crashed the machines during surgery (or some ironic b.s. like that)? What if a leader of the RIAA died? What then? Would you be waving your moralitaaaaaah around? Would you try to hold back the crowd rushing out to take a massive leak on their graves?
--------- Heaven forbid that we Christians should ever be as intolerant and callous of others as they are of us. I mean that literally and quite seriously. ---------
Patrick that comment alone deserved to be moderated upwards. Christians haven't (as far as I've read) even said anything yet and they're being implied here as having attacked Bergman.
Christians preach love and are marred by people who kill and hate, and then anti-Christians capitalize on the examples of killing and hate, and themselves engage in killing and hate.
Evidence: Xetos is apparently only mentioned at http://www.iwin-corp.de/enmain/Products/products.h tml This is gotten to by clicking on the 'Products' page. Xetos does not right now appear on a Yahoo! search. Conclusion: I believe that Xetos is laying low right now, and that they may not have requested the kind of attention that slashdot has now given them. I think they would rather have remained quiet and gotten closer to a finished product. I am deeply interested in their licensing issues, as their multiple releases indicate a Windows NT/2000 scheme, but looking at their screenshots and judging them by that is not wise considering the evidence says they aren't even pushing the product for inspection by the mainstream yet.
That and it has a very suspect item at the bottom of the page:
Xetos WSS: Single CPU Version for Workstations Xetos WSD: Double CPU Version for Workstations Xetos SVS: Single CPU Version for Server Xetos SVD: Double CPU Version for Server Xetos SVQ: Quad CPU Version for Server Xetos Phantom: Special version for iPhantom workstations
I hate to remind anyone but Linux is scalable, automatically, to any of those configurations. It is automatically a workstation and a server, depending what daemons you have running, and by recompiling the kernel you get SMP support. Why would this OS be splitting itself into all these different versions... unless... they were planning to close-source major portions of it and sell it..?
Currently for playing mods, xmp whips all over mikmod when you have an AWE card, because it uses the wavetable features. Unfortunately there isn't a 'libxmp' available so porting it over to Mikmod isn't easy, and the mikmod owners seem not to be interested in AWE wavetable support. Bah, mikmod authors just read the stinking xmp code and integrate! sheesh. mikmod is feature-stripped IMO.
Currently none of the PCI sound cards store sound samples in RAM, which is a feature I rely on very strongly with my AWE 64. I'm always going to look for motherboards with at least one ISA slot so I don't have to give up that functionality. Watch out for the functionality and useful features that you lose forever when 'legacy' hardware is phased out...
For bringing in a credible legal source to provide us professional opinions and insight on legal issues in the industry. I hope that you do this quite often on other issues as well.
As a right winger myself, I fear MicroSoft as much as I fear the Government in that they represent a gross consolidation of power into themselves. When MicroSoft does it, it is like runaway feudalism; when the Government does it, it's Socialism. I personally like the idea of these big forces tearing away at each other so that the little guys, the real foundation of our economy and industrial well-being, can get out from the yoke of monopoly-enforced draconian do-or-die licensing deals and overpricing schemes. To me, the GPL and what Richard Stallman stands for, is a statement against socialism and feudalism, not a communist ideal; then again, under the right (er, wrong) interpretation, Open Source can mean socialism. The interpretation is as important, I guess, as the words and actions. "Power to the people" can empower stronger and more lively competition or it can subvert everyone under a corporate/government hivemind. Just some random thoughts here...
it takes forever to compile it when they release new versions, and I never get the kind of features I see in the screenshots. My compilations look plain and they don't render websites anything like the old netscape did, which means there are some monstrous incompatibilities hiding in that rendering engine (though I must admit it's fast). It's been ages since mozilla started and MSIE has already been through 2 large revisions already. How does Mozilla ever hope to catch up? They don't even have plugin support? Do they support java? Puh-leeze. They'll be done by 2002 maybe. MAYBE.
DVD's cost too much. Buying another copy of the DVD movie is $20 in most cases. Buying the DVD RAM itself is at least $25! So piracy of movies is hardly feasible. Maybe music or games, perhaps, but not movies. Pirating anything on DVD is not very cost effective with the cost of DVD media.
Would you want to run your business on software made only by good looking people? Or fly a plane only made by non geeks? Then go right ahead, and when they crash and burn you'll be outta the gene pool and I won't have to listen to your trollish garbage anymore!:)
Normal computers will never see the advantages of molecular memory. The big companies will charge billions to license its usage, and the korean and taiwanese will charge more when they actually get around to making RAM based on it. "Molecular Memory" ooooh molecular, that's gotta be a word worth at least $4/kilobyte! If you don't believe me, then try buying 128mb of L2 cache RAM. Imagine how expensive and rare that is.. then imagine how expensive it'll be to get a 'molecular memory' "MRAM" chip. Start saving up, kiddies!

I believe the market needs a serious shakeup and shakedown if it is that dependent upon microsoft's business model.
maybe they'll ban microsoft from america :)
yeah but I can't code so what's the use...hehe
