  1. No way Apple will go for it on iPhone Can Now Run Apache, Python, Vim · · Score: 5, Insightful

I see voided warranties in people's futures! There's no way Apple (or AT&T for that matter) is going to give the "OK" on 3rd party applications. Apache web servers and python scripts? If people really wanted to try to get acceptance they would have started with a diet-calculator or bowling-score manager. Forget it now, I can see AT&T and Apply's lawyers scrambling for ways to avoid the maelstorm of hacks and scripts that could threaten their good name. Windows based phones have allowed 3rd part apps since their inception, but somehow it seems much less ominous. Perhaps because they're mostly used in corporate deployments, and pure geek-types?

  2. Re:Exchange, bitches! on Why Linux Has Failed on the Desktop · · Score: 2, Interesting

A quick read of the front page displayed one of common reasons that this, and other open source software will never make it into the enterprise. Lack of marketing.

Compare the two home pages for information and IT director (or higher) might see.

    Here's some quotes from Citadel:
"Users love Citadel because it's software that helps them work, play, stay in touch"
    "an RSS sink"
"replicate rooms between multiple Citadel nodes, allowing you to set up a federated, distributed messaging environment"

    Here's some quotes from Exchange:
    "Anywhere Access"
    "Operational Efficiency"
"Comparing Exchange Server 2007 to other messaging solutions..."

If that isn't obvious to you....what can I do. In fact Citidel deosn't really compete with Exchange it TRIES to compete with the combination of Exchange + Sharepoint, and it doesn't explain that properly at all!

  3. Theif on How FPS Storylines Are Written · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think the closest I've seen to a good plot in an FPS was the Thief series. Or maybe the plot wasn't so much good, as the game play was immersive, so you're more accepting of what plot there was. Another good one was the original Max Payne! The stuff with his baby being killed and the dream sequences that followed were a good plot that really "made you mad" and want. It is hard to write a plot line that involves "kills lots of stuff indiscriminately". I think the best way to get that effect is to do the RPG trick of "sub quests" so that you're running around "open endedly" and choosing different things to do, even though in the end you have to do X Y Z. There should also be an element of "Choose your own adventure", so that different plot lines can come out based on how you play. The problem with that is the production cost of levels and cut-scenes that some players will never see.

  4. Re:here's what I sent them as feedback on Do "Illegal" Codecs Actually Scare Linux Users? · · Score: 1

I think the bigger issue is that, as a business, once you "pony up the small fee" for all the programs you will need in your company, you might as well have bought Windows for the extra $50 when you bought your PC's.
