The problem isnt potential for abuse. The idea itself is an abuse of state power. The state has specific roles, specific privileges, and specific duties. Taking ownership of dead bodies has NEVER been one of them unless there were no surviving kin and / or no plans / means for burial or otherwise disposal.
This idea takes it from "the body belongs to you (via your will) and your survivors" to "the body belongs to the state, who will relinquish it with specific instructions."

And as I recall, they get incredible benefits, an INCREDIBLE vacation schedule (they basically have 3 months off-- theyre getting paid $75k for 9 months of work = ~100k for every 12 months worked), and of course the union benefit of being quite difficult to fire if youre actually incompetent.
Find me some statistics which show a huge problem of "slave-labor"-ish conditions in the US.
I imagine you wont, since we have top ten median income, purchasing power, life span, GDP / hours worked, etc etc etc. By no economic measure is the situation remotely as dire as GP wants to paint it.
Unions fixed a huge number of problems back in the day. They created problems too, but it was worth it. Now they basically provide the problems for free, with no benefits to weigh us down.
If / when we return to an industrial revolution, sure, bring on the unions. For now? Im pretty sure we dont need them, and they just create problems. I intellectually find it hard to justify laws that make it illegal to fire bad workers without the consent of the worker.
When the average teachers in Chicago are making ~75k / yr with incredible benefits, and their schools are in shambles, yea, perhaps we need to talk about some firings. Unions do a lot of great things, to be sure, but they dont come cheap.
I havent done a day of union work in my adult life, and I would hardly call the work I do "slave labor". In fact we have by many measures one of the cushiest lifestyles in the world -- median pay, mean pay, average household purchasing power, etc.
I mean, i know this is slashdot and all, but seeing ignorant, inflamatory posts getting modded +5 gets a little old, you know?
100,000 votes spread across 50 states? Half of whom (statistically) werent voting for you anyways, and half of the remainder who will vote for you no matter what you do?
You cant be serious. The idea that the state has default rights to your body after your death is pretty awful, and Im a little astonished that a significant number of people think its OK to stake claims over the bodies of the deceased.
Why not have a law that says "if you dont opt out, your children become property of the state", too? Same basic premise, if anyone REALLY wants to keep custody they can just opt out, right?
The fuss is that IE9-metro-edition sucks about 10 times more than IE9-desktop-edition, and that half of the reason I went to Win7 in the first place was all the GUI improvements to multi-tasking with docking etc. Now im told that thats out the window, as is any mouse-oriented GUI? Yea, no thanks.
The boiling the frog thing generally refers to slowly raising the water temp, so the frog doesnt notice. I think everyone noticed the metro thing, and theres a reason I havent heard businesses getting thrilled about it.
For the record, Office still is non-metro. Hmm, I wonder why.
SAT and AP exams, as well as all AP in-class tests, allowed TI-82/83/89s.
The 89 MIGHT have been banned on one or two of those, owing to its ability to factor algebraic expressions and to perform integration / differentiation.
Which brings us right back to why people are generally OK with not having to worry about hosting, DNS, and all the other stuff that goes into making a blog.
Which they should! You don't throw your soldiers out into the enemies tender mercies, just 'cause. But if Broder lied - or was confused - then he has lost their protection, one would think.
This is key.
If you want to be reputable, absolutely you defend your own. Ask him "is any truth to the Musk claims?", and if he says no, back him up. But if you catch him lying, terminate him, because you just staked your reputation on the guy and he screwed you.
Go be a waiter in a diner for 5 years and see if you feel the same way.
How do you think I paid off school?
The .edu part of that URL indicates its from the schools, and the "PUBLIC schools" indicates its from the state.

I think the official Chicago Public Schools website can be considered "credible" and "nonbiased".
I think teachers are important, but is the 68K number you give for a full year? If so, then it's bad.
That puts them squarely in the top 40% of all paid workers.
then that comes to 85K which ain't bad
That would put them very nearly in the top 20% of all workers.

"screwed" meaning "top 5% wealthiest by measures both historical and current"?

Just dont make any money, I hear that pisses them off.

Yea, Im sure that will make a huge difference.
Organ donor opt-out...

Theres also the hilarious saga of the PSN breach, dont forget about that.
Excuse me, but I just built a 8-core piledriver system with 32GB of RAM, a pretty solid Mobo and case for around $550.
If by "x86" they mean "32-bit", then yea, its not that great.

Youre right, your post is ironic.
Breaking the law is always "bad". The only question is whether not breaking it would be a worse evil.
Sounds great. Say, remind me again, what does light shielding on a nuclear reactor weigh?
