Simple. Bezos answers to Bezos and Amazon answers to stock holders. Now Bezos can easily afford the post, float the content to Amazon (which enriches him as well, since he owns part of it) and the stockholders and pundits have nothing but good things to say about the whole thing. I would have done the same thing. Had he purchased it with Amazon money a whole freaking slurry of controversy and weeks of discussions would have ensued among various stakeholders and finance media. Who wants that? This may be a result of the trend of the stock market acting short-term. It is much easier for Bezos to purchase it and "sell" the content to Amazon than it would be to field the angst over Amazon purchasing it and trying to monetize it.

Small businesses are small because they are inefficient. They are also characterized by xenophobic attitudes which are fueled by a narrow view of the world. Managers of growing businesses and large corporations are very "worldly" and have a firm grasp of who the competition is and why they (the competition) are successful as well. Even when you are making good money in a strong business you have to ask yourself: what are my threats and weaknesses? Small business owners are usually too busy with customers, running to the bank, and joshing with the bookkeeper.

Agreed, Amazon is not losing money. It is however reinvesting all profit aggressively. It is thriving, growing, and slated to rock Wal-Mart (which is starting to look VERY incompetent next to Amazon). Try using Wal-Mart Site-to-Store a few times if you want more inconvenience and trouble than it's worth. Amazon is investing to establish this service, that is why Wal-Mart started it in the first place.

Yeah, I have googled "pressure cooker bomb" while researching the Boston Bombing. People can't be afraid to search for anything. Once they are then society has some severe problems. As conservative as librarians are one can only appreciate their stalwart insistence on academic freedom as a value that is core to a free society. It isn't philosophy, it is just truth. People should be allowed to search for anything and learn about everything without fear of harassment or even scrutiny. In my book there is no room for the slightest compromise in this regard. Policing people's search results is only going to strengthen actual terrorists because most of our resources will be consumed doing nothing while savvy perpetrators avoid detection anyway. The smart solution is rarely the most obvious or easiest.

A good proxy server is going to allow your system administrators to decrypt your SSL connection. The proxy feature works for SSL but not before exposing all of the information in your connection to the administrators. So using an external proxy and SSL is not going to provide any security. You are going to have to be a little more savvy than that which will also be obvious to your system admins that you are subverting their tracking/logging system.

I doubt most mathematicians really understand the Pythagorean Theorem. You get so used to theories and their application that you fool yourself into thinking you know them. Take manual long division or multiplication for example. We understand how to line up the numbers and perform the operations but prove to me that it works or *why* it works! There might be some 45 year old virgin with a severe intellect munching on DMT and living in his mom's basement somewhere in the world who can handle this but I think that most mathematicians would regurgitate meaningless crap they have been taught--offered as proof. As for me, I have no freaking idea where to even start proving these theories, but realizing *that* is half the battle.
