That's what HDI measures, which I why I quoted the rankings.
Buying power.
As it happens the GDP numbers I quoted are adjusted for purchasing power but if they weren't, the adjustment would work in favor of the USA as the cost of living in Germany is higher.
Divide by number of people in the country.
Seriously? 60 versus 5? USA population is only about 3.7 times greater than Germany's.
Actually, as much as I believe public sector unions are a logical absurdity as well as harmful parasites on the society, I don't think they are the number 1 problem with the education system.
The problem with the public schools is caused by the lack of competition between schools for students, which is exactly what makes American universities the best in the world. The lack of competition is caused by the system where the school districts get money directly from the government rather then from parents and where they are guaranteed students who do not have a choice of school. Instead of paying money directly to the school district, pay it to the parents who can then make a choice where to spend it which will force schools to improve. Competition works.
What makes you think Germany is doing better than the USA?
Per capita GDP? USA: $48K, Germany: $37K
Human Development Index? USA: ranked 4th. Germany ranked 9th
Quality of the education system (since that's what we are talking about): USA 60+ universities in the top 100. Germany: 5 in the Times Higher Education Rankings
Where is German innovation? Compare the number of US high tech companies with German. Compare the ease of obtaining capital for entrepreneurs in USA v. Germany. For that matter compare the popular culture where Germany almost completely copies the USA.
Even with big geographic and demographic advantages, Germany is still lagging behind the USA and the reason is that the burden of the heavy regulation, taxes, welfare state and the unions is too much even for the German worker to carry on his back.
Oh come on. Zombies are popular because they are human like and yet its ok to slaughter them in the most savage ways and still be the good guy and even have fun while doing it. Now you'll ruin the fun by saying they really represent poor hungry people.
So the "famous" statement is a recollection of one person from a lunch in 1996 which Greenspan denies. I don't know why I'm defending Greenspan here because he has certainly not been the free market champion but here is another quote from him from the first Google result:
"An area in which more rather than less government involvement is needed, in my judgment, is the rooting out of fraud. It is the bane of any market system. Indeed, Washington would do well to divert resources from creating new regulations to greatly stepping up the enforcement of anti-fraud and anti-racketeering laws1."
It's ridiculous what kind of nonsense is getting modded up today. It's as if slashdot is invaded by a bunch of teenage occupy movement members on drugs. If by "liberal" I mean "Alan Greenspan"? What does that even mean? When did he "famously" say that we shouldn't have laws against fraud? Do you have a link?
If I can legally take your payment for a service that I promise to provide, and then fail to provide it, then free or any other kind of market is impossible.
I would seriously suggest that you check your mental health. Whether you agree with them or not, Tea Party has nothing whatsoever to do with any religious fundamentalism or installing Ayatollahs to run this country so your whole post is a rant of an insane person.
Do you use a MasterCard or VISA? Do you watch ABC, follow pro football or basketball, buy books published by Random House, HarperCollins or McGraw-Hill, are a paying member of any of a dozen unions, buy any products made by Revlon, Pfizer, LOreal, Sony and a hundred other companies?
According to your logic, if any of the above is true, you should not be upset if a group of random hackers shuts down your website and causes you financial harm.
Canada has a worse system though. No primaries - party organization rather than voters select the candidates. No executive branch election - winning party sets up the cabinet however it wants. No accountability except the vote in the next election which is in 5 years time in the lower house - at least US House representatives can be kicked out in 2 years. No voting at all for the upper house - the members are selected by the Prime Minister. Worst of all is the "parliamentary supremacy" - the rule of men rather than the rule of law. I don't see where Canadians get such enormous confidence in their system. US has it's problems too but it is a lot more democratic political system than the one Canada adopted from the UK.
Making it easy to vote is not necessarily a good thing. Why should an idiot who can't figure out something as simple as voter registration have everything setup for him just so he can check the box next to the candidate with the funniest name?
Why not consider a possibility that licensing and regulation are two different words because they mean two different things before you start writing knee jerk posts you anonymous coward.
Why is there a commission to decide whether I can drive you from A to B for a fee and whether you can call or text me on the phone to arrange it and to whom I have to pay a very substantial annual fee for the privilege of doing so? The answer: its a legalized racket, just like all business licensing.
Hate to reply to a coward, anonymous or not, but what exactly did I say that is not correct except that I meant to say decades, as SS and madicare are not quite scheduled go bust in the next 10 years but even as it stands it is not much of an exaggeration.
It all depends on your point of view. I agree that the mainstream Democrats have had some success is keeping their lunatic left wing quiet by pretending to be more liberal than they are, kind of like the Republicans pander to their religious nuts with words more than with actions. From my personal libertarian vantage point Obama certainly seems very liberal.
Oh I see, so in your opinion if you can't get the people's elected representatives to agree with your law, the just pass it without them. That's what the executive orders are for, right? Have you ever considered a possibility that passing new legislation is not automatically a good thing. Government is not a law factory where the progress is measured by the number of new laws produced.
Yes, you are right. We hate him not because he is the most radical liberal president we have ever had (yes, counting Carter), or because he socialized our healthcare system through a procedural loophole against the wishes of majority of Americans, or because he increased our debt from 10 to 16 trillion in 3 years with no end in sight, or because he went back on most of his election promises including bringing about a more transparent government, or because the highest percentage of Americans in history are now government dependent, or because he is doing nothing about the reality of SS and medicare becoming insolvent in the next decade, or because our country got worse in every imaginable way since he got elected . We hate him because he is half black. Happy now?
It is but it's hard for the government to stop constantly producing new laws even if they are completely ineffective. The congress, not to mention state and local governments have already signed several libraries worth of new laws in 2012, as they do every year, and it would be a shame for the executive branch to be left behind.
What makes you think that Obama wants to repeal the DMCA? With the amount of support and money he is getting from Hollywood it is not surprising he is not mentioning copyright at all.
It is silly to say that Canada is doing better than the USA when Canada is essentially completely dependent on it's proximity to the USA: 75% of Canadian exports go to the USA. In global rankings such as HDI we are about the same, even though Canada has vastly greater natural resources per capita than the USA. It's economy is still based on oil and logging. Where you see a huge difference is in innovation and entrepreneurship which is sorely lacking in Canada just like in Europe and for the same reasons. Where are Canadian Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft etc etc?
Personally, I consider that evil. It is why I quit my job working for a payday loan company. They prey on poor, stupid people.
Yet, there is a telling shortage of banks and other businesses willing make short term loans to those poor, stupid people at a lower rate than the payday loan companies charge. It may seem that they are "preying" on these people, even the payday loan companies might secretly think they are, but in reality they are just serving their market by offering the best deal available. If someone else could offer a better deal and attract these customers and still turn a profit, they would.
Now there are some fan groups (not mentioning any names here), whose members would probably respond to this kind of abuse with a smile an a "Thank you sir, may I have another?!?"
Can the members of these unnamed fan groups please line up in front of Apple stores on September 12th for identification. Thanks!
Quality of life.

national debt share per capita
Ok, USA: $50K, Germany $57K
Literally every sentence you said is wrong and yet you are calling others blind morons.

The WHO warns about similar numbers of people facing obesity problems as they do starvation problems.Â
Can't wait for obesity riots. Oh wait, they are happening right now in Chicago.
Also, it's a good place to live if you enjoy beating your wife every once in a while.

Liberals and free market is like the evangelicals and evolution. They don't understand it and yet they are obsessed with it.
No, fraud is not ok, free market or not, but try getting a liberal or a chimp (which might be easier) to understand that.
A lot of companies (and unions) supported SOPA: http://www.scribd.com/doc/76259944/SOPA-Supporters

In other words that's about twice as expensive as $20 for 2GB that I pay to my cell phone company.
