    Actually, that is IIRC a hardware problem with that exact card -- it wouldn't allow its IO port address to change from default. I came across the same thing while working on my senior project. I needed two NICs, but the only ones the lab had available were 3c509s and I read in documentation somewhere about it being just that card (and other 3Com NICs using the same base). I switched the second to an NE2000 and I got it to work fine.

    Excuse me, but a Kernel is NOT an amenity. It is required for the OS to function. It is the CORE of the OS, and therefore the Motor analogy is perfect.

    Well, I don't necessarily agree with that. Linus' attitude is definitely more positive, but he gives me the impression that he doesn't want to be a leader, per se, he just wants to code -- although fame isn't all that bad.

    RMS is an arrogant asshole, but he has the "killer instinct" of a leader. Which is what he seems to consider himself.

    I don't mean to downplay the seriousness of this situation, which I doubt, but the online world will not "grind to a halt." Will all of the existing servers fail when that happens? No way. The only thing that will stop is growth, which is still a problem, but won't bring down the 'Net.

    stop before you start, the only thing I am talking about here is OS stability, not which computer is "better."

    Well, to be fair, Windows doesn't crash much at all any more. The last time I had Win2K crash (out of ~50 PCs) was a few months ago. Granted, most of them don't run much software at all, but MS has definitely started creating better OSes. I still hate them because they suck, but they don't crash as much. That said, OSX probably is a much better System, and despite MS getting better, OSX is still a million times more stable. But we need a bit of perspective here -- a large part of the reason that OSX doesn't crash as much is because the hardware it runs on will never change, beyond a few add-on cards or upgrades.

    Ah, well that's a big difference. I'm all for tax breaks as incentives, that IS a good idea. I wonder, though, how much of a break can really be given. Enough to make overhauling a station seem more financially realistic? I don't know enough about the economics & taxation of Service Stations to answer that.
