  1. Re:Pokemon Still Big In High School on Pokemon Leads Game Sales Up 31% in May · · Score: 0

Pokemon is still remembered by most guys in my engineering course, an a couple of em of em have even been known to sit up back with their DS or gameboy on occasion. While it may not bode well for anyone hoping to get safely over a bridge built by these guys after they graduate, it does show that the full on assault-on-3-fronts of video games, anime series and trading cards that happened a few years back has definately instilled pokemon in the public consciousness to the point that even grandad knows who pikachu is.

Pokemon's continued success has not happened by accident. It is a good game well marketed and keeping the game primarily on a portable platform seems to have contributed greatly to its success. Though in saying that i have heard people i know call for a Zelda type 3d pokemon world. How sane they are to ask for such a thing is a question that remains unanswered.

  2. Re:What could happen? on EU Considering Regulating Sale of Violent Games · · Score: 0

Well apparantly quite high. The fact there was less time between the guy playing GT and driving than most of these instances has probably not helped our cause.

The judge should be able to apply some relative thinking to see that boy racers will be drawn towards racing games and not that the game will make boy racers out of good drivers. I would have thought if ever a game was to advocate taking your car to an actual racetrack instead of the streets, it'd be GT. Though the case could have been far more worrying in a possible games censorship sense if the guy had been playing say.... Need For Speed Underground.

  3. A question of motives on Companies That Clean Up Bad Online Reputations · · Score: 0

So these sites offer a sort of anti-googlebomb service for a fee? Lord knows theres enough bad reputations, justified or not, on the net to warrant this kind of service. The main problem as I see it is that the companies actions depend on the motives of each particular client paying to "disappear".

I would hope that these companies can keep their integrity and try to adopt a "do no evil" attitude themselves, as I would hate to see a mercenary approach leading to less useful search results for the majority of web users.

  4. Guns in Church on Church Threatens Legal Action Over Sony Game · · Score: 0, Offtopic

    From the article:

Patsy McKie, from Mothers Against Violence, whose son Dorrie was killed in Manchester, said it was time to stand up to the makers of violent games.

"I believe it's something that needs to be taken seriously first by the Church but also by parents.

What needs to be taken seriously by parents is the duty they have to educate their children in what the difference is between game and reality. I agree with the Dean's claim that "for many young people these games offer a different sort of reality" but with parents influence, this reality he speaks of will be seen only on their playstations, where the developers intended it to be seen.

  5. Re:The Pirate Bay on TorrentSpy Ordered By Judge to Become MPAA Spy · · Score: 1

If you don't want DRM then stop pirating, you can't have it both ways.

Indeed, the motivation for pirated media and illegal downloads is the fact you do not get DRM, and the supposed benefit of DRM is that you get no pirated content appearing on the net.

However, becoming DRM free will not work unless everyone stops illegally copying media. Thus I dont think becoming DRM free again is going to work in the real world. human nature won't allow either side to give in.

Can you see joe six-pack giving up getting things for free that he would otherwise have to pay for? If he downloads, he can buy more beer or copies of madden instead of music and films. Or do you believe that the RIAA or MPAA have any sort of cut off where they will start allowing distribution of DRM-free media again. I dont see it. Like "hey guys, we reduced the effect of piracy on sales by 70%, we can give them the DRM free stuff in stores now"

The current situation is dire indeed
