  3. His thesis used to be correct on Neil deGrasse Tyson Touches Off Debate With Remarks On Commercial Space (theverge.com) · · Score: 1

His thesis does not appear to considers current political and economic realities. The current situation is that governments (esp. the US gov) cannot spend another dime on fanciful spaceflights until everyone is fully insured, police brutality is stamped out through omnipresent surveillance of police, the terrorist state is pacified, females have equal access to STEM training and jobs, soc sec and medicare are fully funded, and any manner of other social welfare institutions are fully operational and ready for battle. Until then, a trip to Mars is only available to people or corporations or the founders of corporations who have a dream and enough money to make it happen. If asteroid mining ever yields precious metals or unlimited energy (could you steer asteroids to impact earth in a specific place and generate net energy gains??), then you'll see governments going to war over the rights to mine them. The Social Justice crowd has fully convinced me (and pretty much everyone else) that we (the US people/government) don't have a dime to spare on anything that isn't directly going to the eradication of social injustices. Maybe someone gets creative and funds an all female/minority version of NASA to go to Mars, thereby creating opportunities that alleviate a few situations and still goes to space. But I don't see that as the path of least resistance for solving those problems, with nearly all the resistance being political. None of this should surprise anyone for whom /. is a primary source of news.

If a phone company wants to rule the world, make this an option.

  8. Re:Rent at all is inherently problematic on The Vicious Circle That Is Sending Rents Spiraling Higher · · Score: 1

Property Rental is not the evil that you're making it out to be. It is actually very beneficial to a large number of people since it allows them live in places where they would not otherwise be able to afford to live (Check out Reasons to Rent section: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...). San Francisco and Manhattan would still be well out of the price range of the vast majority of American's to buy in, even if renting were illegal. Property Rental is not the engine that enriched the majority of people living in Manhattan. Wall Street bankers would still run up the prices of property beyond the means of normal people. Forcing people to buy in Manhattan would reduce the prices to the point where people "rich enough" to buy the property would buy it and then you force all the people who can't afford to buy to move out. You have created an even greater division in the classes than you started with. The issue of property prices is one of supply and demand. I recently drove from St. Louis to Colorado. There were places in Kansas where the local government was advertising that they would give you 10+ acres of land if you would just move there to live! Rent isn't the problem. Whether your buy or rent, Supply & Demand is the problem. You can't make more beach front property unless you're Saudi Arabia.

Give me Data with his emotion chip and the his crazy laughter/break down when he and Geordi were scouting that ship...that was hard enough to watch. Give me Short Circuit. Heck even Earth to Echo was consumable. Maybe I'm just too American and can't quite stomach this Australian aesthetic. Just one guy's opinion...I'm sure you've got one too.

we don't outlaw people from speaking their minds. Thankfully, our forefathers were intelligent enough (religious, though many of them were) to secure our rights to speak our minds (slander aside), and to secure our rights to practice religion (or not) as we see fit. They were also smart enough not to think they could protect us from ourselves, but they did try to protect us from each other and from an oppressive government. I'm glad to be an American and a Christian.
