But when the sales figures go though the roof on the linux versions compared to the Win2k version, I'd like to see if it's becasue they want to avoid the Mircosoft tax and they are just using Windows licenses they already own, or if they actually want to run a x86 linux on their machine.

I think the real test of linux vs. NT marketshare will be this year. Linux has the backing of most companies now, and Windows2000 is soposed to be NT done right.

This is where I think linux will do some major catching up in NT markets. NT4 will no be supported(Microsoft will just go "get windows2000" like they did to Win95 users when Win98 was released). They will have to replace NT4 machines with something supported. Do they go with the Windows2000 upgrades at God knows how much money? After hearing pundit after pundit spelling doom for Trnasmeta because they can't compete with Intel, this is good news. They said Intel isn't worried in the slightest about Crusoe. It doesn't run fast, and no OEMs jumped on the bandwagon.

Now Intel is rushing out a postable chip of thier own. Sounds to me like Intel is worried. They are probably even more worried that the 5400 Crusoe will be out in lapstops by summer. Say evev on best estimates Intel releases Q2 2001. that's almost a full year after Crusoe. I don't think OEMs are going to wait that long. And I think that once OEMs and people use the Crusoe chips, it's going to be a hard sell to go back to Intel. Expecially if they release a PPC emulation layer, and they are all running OS X on their laptops.

Only OEMs that may not jump on the Crusoe bandwagon are the Dells, etc. that have a a HUGE Intel based desktop/server market. Intel may say "if you use those Crusoe chips in your laptops, there maybe a Xeon shortage next month. And how many Xeon systems you have to build next mont? Be a shame to lose them" Being put in situations like that make it hard to choose Transmeta.

Intel is now playing catch-up on two markets now. AMD is releasing faster Athlons as Intel releases faster P3s. Now Transmeta is going afer the mobile market. Both companies do what they are doing better then Intel is right now. And unlike Intel, their chips aren't tied to x86. Althons have a x86 layer themselves, and Transmeta has their code morphing.

It's the begining of the end of the Intel monopoly now. Intel will always be a player, but soon their bark will be worse then their bite, and this Intel monopoly will be over. And maybe once Intel loses it's bite, x86 will just go away, and we all know what dies with x86? Windows. It's a dream isn't it? =)

Whether that's true or not, I don't know. But it does bringup and interesting question. How many games HAS Loki sold? I mean, I'd assume 50,000 linux users(me being one of them)bought Quake 3 Arena. And I know there has to be 50,000 linux users in the world that want Sim City 3000.

It also brings up a second question. Do linux gamers buy games they wouldn't have normally bought JUST to get the sales figures up so games they DO want get released? That's a big weight on a comsumers sholders. The idea of "If you don't buy game x which you don't like, you may not game y which you been waiting for for over a year" is not one many people want to be put in, including myself.

I've bought Quake 3 Arena, I'm looking forward to Sim City 3000, and I'll buy what good games come out for linux that I want to play. I won't be forced into buying a $50 game that I don't like to "maybe" get a port of a game I do.

If they would have, they would have read survey after survey about how AOL is rated dead last in about every customer satisfaction survey. They would have read about the horrors of 5.0 before they installed it. Not to mention they are drasticly overpaying for service. $21.95? Most of the local ISPs around here are $14.95 or under, and offer everything AOL has.

I mean, people research what cel phone company they use. They research what long distance phone company they use. But they just see a corny commerical on TV about people that "have a special kinship because they have AOL" and sign up, install buggy software, and alot of the time screw their Windows/MacOS install.

So I say good for them. They should have known what they were getting into before they handed over their $21.95 a month. Just like people that don't read long distance agreements when they sign up because if they sign up they get $25. And then realize that they pay 30 cents a minute. If someone can't do a little bit of research before they make a decision like finding a ISP, or a long distance company, and they get get screwed because they didn't, they got what they deserve.

Maybe next time, they will read a couple articles and ask a couple friends before making a decision. That is, unstead of falling for a comercial with some idiot pre-teen going "I've got mail, yipee horay!"

  7. You aren't SOPOSED to code in it's native set on Ars Technica Gets Into Crusoe · · Score: 5

That's the whole point of Crusoe, you DON'T code for it directly. It takes other instuctions, starting with x86, and runs them faster, better, and optimizes on the fly.

The "code morphing" layer is what makes Crusoe stand apart from the rest. It optimizes on the fly the instuction set it's running on the fly. This means that your aps will run faster and faster as it runs. This layer is what gives the Crusoe it's speed. Coding nativly would be SLOWER then using the morphing layer. You also don't get the benifit of the optimaztion.

Also, the instruction sets are different for each chip. Each set is further optimized for what it's use is going to be. So if you code for one Crusoe chip natively , it doesn't run on the other. This lets Transmeta change the instruction set as needed to. Like if it's faster to do something one way, they can change it and not break compatability with anything. And they can give you the update with a software patch.

So, it doesn't matter if people don't have the instruction set for the native Crusoe processors. They will change alot, and everytime they change you would have to recode every program again. Why bother? Also you don't get to use what the Crusoe processor is all about, it's code morphing layer.

So, PLEASE, stop complaining that you can't code natively for this chip. The code won't go any faster, and as soon as Transmeta changes the set, your programs wouldn't run anyways. So it's a moot point to code navitly for it.

Detected all my hardware and was up and running on the net as soon as I typed in my network info and clicked "restart networking".

Then I did what most people do when they install linux for the first time. Looked at my computer and said "now what"? Didn't have much for a web broswer. Net+ was so-so, and when you have to point at Opera as your top broswer, that's never a good sign. Mozilla is beign ported, but it was slow as nuts on a dual celeron 458 with 128megs RAM.

Then I thought, who would buy this? Although very user-friendly, it was $60. the OS itself offered ALOT of nice features, but didn't have any aps to warrent spending the $60 to get the OS. I mean, you thought Linux didn't have ap support. BeOS has about the same ratio of aps to Linux as Linux does to Windows. Thier market was soposed to be mediaphiles and professionals, but any media aps they had was done better elsewhere.

I wish that those rumors of RedHat buying Be Inc. went though. The BeOS has ALOT of fine advancements in thier desktop GUI, SMP support(which was excellent), and their internal media code. Such advanements combined with linux, could push a BeOS with a linux kernel very far on the desktop.

A "stable" release is thoughly tested, sometimes TOO thoughly tested =) But when you have something that's critial on being rock stable, these are they way to go to start. And if there is a program that you need a later version because of mroe functionality, you can do that too.

Tou can just as easily update packages buy pointing to "unstable", or now "woody". I can get updates to programs AS THEY ARE RELEASED. I don't have to wait for the distro to update everything themselves every couple months. Or if I really need something, hunt down a package, or get teh source and compile myself. I can just type "apt-get dist-upgrade" and my system is the latest it can be.

And with the large number of packages, I can be sure that whatever piece of free software(speach and beer), that they will ALL update with that one command. And I can rest assured that although I didn't compile that myself, it's not only a safe program to run, but it's configured to correctly work on my system. How can you go wrong? The more packages the better.

So, waiting for a release for the most part is a moot point. You can install Debian whenever you want, and have the lastest of everything, or have something that's thoughly tested(MUCH more then other distros). And, "unstable" for the most part, as alot of people will tell you, is alot better then other distros .x releases.

This isn't about free speach, stuff like this isn't protected. It's about keeping the same standards that already apply to libraries to the new medium of the internet. It's not censorship if it's censoring things that aren't protected under the 1st amendment.

The problem seems to be that the "black list" of software that is used is encrypted. Meaning that it's not the gov't that determins what is obsecene(as is the case now), it's private companies that make the software. These companies can pick and choose what can and can not be seen. They usually block access to sites that ARE protected under the 1st amendment, shuch as anti-censorship sites, etc.

Maybe a gov't body can be set up to determine what sites fall under a general obsenity law, and open the list to all the censorware companies. And what's worse, is a website like gamefaq.com. gamefaqs.com is a well known website where users(mostly under 18) get game information. gamefaq.com is a porn site.
