I don't think it's possible to entirely escape problems like reporter bias and the influence of feeders, not to mention simple incompetence. What I like about Slashdot, however, is that there is no attempt on the part of CT or Hemos (or most topic posters) to appear authoritative; furthermore, just about every post has its opinion challenged by another poster.
Sure it's difficult to know who to believe, but it encourages us to make up our own minds rather than blindly believing some "authoritative" source who, in the end, is only human. Here at Slashdot, anyone presuming to be anything but merely human is flamed into oblivion... and that's the way it should be.
Merely speculation here, but try this on for size:
The author (or publisher representative) releases an amount of the novel exactly proportionate to however much of the novel has been paid for (this is presuming that the entire thing has already been written). So when you put in your $3 donation, you get the direct result that one more sentence is published. Immediate gratification in a way never before provided!
Likewise, although perhaps not as effective, you could release songs a second at a time, as they are paid for...
Anyone think this would work? I think the combination of seeing the direct effects of your contribution and immediate gratification might just be irresistable. And that's just one possible outcome of this protocol...
Am I the only one who's noticed that the column of percentages up there only add to about 50? Doesn't really change the argument but, seems fishy... or is there a good reason why 50% of the code is unaccounted for?
Hello, nimrods... he's not asking for a software solution... He's asking how/whether to GPL his own company's! How about reading for once?!
As a partial response, I think that everyone would like to see a GPL'ed shopping program, however the concerns mentioned earlier about encryption may make the legal issues of releasing the source difficult...
I was just thinking, hmm... this could be a poll; "I prefer the following ergo keyboard"... then I see someone else beat me to it.
I have a Datahand, y'know the type with padded wrist rests and a well for each finger. I like it all right but I'm not sure if it was really worth the $750 (and that at a discount). What do other people with this keyboard think? I still have minor problems...
I get the feeling that different people have different problems and no single solution is going to work for everyone.
Perhaps we could have a spelling test too. That seems to be a fairly reliable (although not infallible) indicator of cluelessness on this site at least.
It makes me laugh to see someone complaining about stupid PC users, then turn around and use words like "liscence" or "speach." Nothing makes you look more pathetic.
I have to buy a bunch of CD's and I don't have quite the convenience of a record store -- I have to wait for a while, but heck, I get to shop online, and how can you beat that? I get most of the same popular artists...

(not having read the article, only /. summary)
uh... plants will perpetuate a gene that kills off their pollinators? riiiiiiiight....

Why should I learn how my alternator works? I just wanna code PERL...
You are a FUCKING LAMER. A waste of space. A pathetic excuse for a human being.
If you (and all your type) don't have something meaningful to add, stop wasting bandwidth.
Ha. We are scheduled to reach the Singularity in the 30's. Barring infrastructural meltdown in Y2K, of course.

And you -KNOW- they're still making money...
