These days when people want beat making software, they usually want something that will sequence drums, come with sampled instruments, record tracks and have effects all in one package. Of course regular DAW software like Cubase will do this, but from my observation- DJ's along with novices want something simplistic so they can psuedo-produce pieces in a minute amount of time.
So to sum this up ~ Beat making software = easy software for dj's and non professionals.
As for making beats with open source software, its awesome. I've personally made some tunes with the linuxsampler that you can check out at: http://www.youtube.com/romxero
Prince is basically showing for the artist making money they dont need to sell cd, they need to sell tickets and when you sell tickets everything else can be sold (ie merchandise, cds, etc, etc). He is smart because that all you need to do, he isnt signed to anything. Also if you didnt know Prince has been giving his music out for free, for about a damn decade, he is a true artist, he really isnt all about the money at all.
I love his music, his new stuff is good too!
If you look up the most in recent times, successful tour, it was his, all that money wasnt even split to a record company do to contract, he took most of that cash to himself!
Lets not forget he was one of the first to really utilize drum machines in songs, before him was sly stone but it wasnt commercial enough with "Family Affair". (I know you demo scene guys will have something to say but seriously I mean COMMERCIAL popular music, not synth drone and awkward analog drum machines making blips and hit with sid chips chirping and calling it music.)
Honestly I installed the demo, got soo fed up with it, DEA formatted my partition and installed slackware to feel comfortable again. Xandros sucks!! Suse is ok though, but SLOW, stable but very slow. Fedora still kicks arse
To tell you the truth Contra Costa County sucks!! My mom worked for the college district here too and all I can say is those computers where there at one point and somehow they all disapeared... lol
yeah the employees and officials were snatching them, hell I snagged some parts later on too. I remember them in the classrooms at one point, and then they were gone and replaced with Imacs. Later mostly dells came in mixed with old Imacs, those ibm comps are good as gone. Alot of them stolen and most in storage somewhere or sold over seas.

In halo odst a super computer controlled the whole city in South Africa. Interesting....
C is very popular with embedded electronic devices, so it doesn't strike me odd that it is coming back.

These things are gonna be released in 10 years or less! The maximum is 1.3TB of data!
Not only that they will also make holographic cards too.
