    And this is why I prefer to build it myself. I know exactly what's installed and have all the needed drivers and the only crapware that's installed is what I added. Otherwise my system is clean and setup exactly how I want it.

    and yet , I find it easier to simply whitelist those half dozen sites I actually need scripts to run on. All others are blocked by defualt so Facebook/others aren't the problem everyone makes it out to be if you follow a "Deny All" policy by default. Sure I've encountered a few websites so borked they require scripts and usually, I have little to no reason to stay/return in that case because their content is worthless to me then breathing. Sorry fools but if you insist on scripts for every god damn thing on your page, then I'm leaving and never coming back for "In Your Face" shit.

    I'm one of the many folks on G+ who love the ability to keep posts private and on topic. In fact most of my activity isn't even going to show in th public results unlike Facebook (where you have to ensure everything is private before posting). Simply put, those of us who actually use G+ find that it's easier to keep things on topic for posts then the constant keyboard diarrea that Facebook is. The main feature we love is the privacy settings, think of it as being in a meeting room - yes it can get damn noisy and such but it's contained within a single room instead of standing in the middle of the Colliseum with Mics being shoved down your throat and every damn reporter asking "Do you still beat your wife" type questions.

    Personally, I'm not that active but some of my circles have activity levels that rival any discussion on /. that I've seen since signing up but I don't have to worry about down modding trolls and idiots as I can simply mute their replies and the entire sub-thread. Much nicer then some of the crap /. gets at times.

    Yea it's damn tought to make a piezo generator w/o toxic compounds. All that's required is a quartz crystal and conductive pickups as we've done for years (computer timing circuits/clocks anyone?) and NO I didn't RTFA but it sounds like there's lots of bias about Piezo generators.

    According to HP this draws 13.5 watts when using PoE and yes, that includes the damn display.

    Now if they'd offer similar setups with Linux support, I'd finally be able to get my NetBoot setup working correctly in the office. Much nicer to simply use a thin client that can be easily replaced in moments when they die while ensuring all of the damn data the employees actually need access to are on the servers and properly backed up.

    and yet I just bought a 30 pack of 40 watt Incadescent bulbs for better lighting and environmental efficiency - No Mercury. Do they burn out any faster? Not as far as I've seen based on the quality of the damn CFL bulbs we've been able to get cheaply. Those don't last anylonger then an incadescent bulb and have mercury in them plus they look horid where I really need them.

    What I'm doing now is moving towards the halogen based 12v bulbs in low voltage track light systems. quite a bit of light and can be run straight from a 12v source w/o converting to AC first. Very nice as I'm also moving off the grid and beginning to switch to a PV array due to planned rolling blackouts by Edison International this year. Getting tired of having my power go out every damn summer because no one want's to invest in power line maintenance.

    I used to have an HP 1600 Color laser and while the quality wasn't as good as photo paper, it was good enough for test prints. Well worth at least testing and the nice thing is, with a bit a tweaking, you'll soon have decent color printing for what ever reason.

    You sir are correct that piracy is theft as it usually involves the taking of physical goods by force yet RIAA/MPAA want to encourage everyone that a copyright violation is as bad if not worse then piracy, where people are injured/killed while the theft is taking place but No One gets killed during a copyright violation, otherwise the Chinese Population would be dropping faster then it's increasing and the government there would be dead and gone.

    I gave up watching commercial tv 2 decades ago as there wasn't anything worthwhile/inteligent on. Got tired of Giligan's Island, the damn 2 Hr Slow Speed chase of O.J. Simpson down the freeway and other shit like that. Of course it helped that I had access to the local library and was able to read damn near everything in the system that I was interested in.

    Any employee sending encrypted email from a company computer that the company does not have the key for will be fired immediately. You've just violated various provisions of Sarbanes/Oxley (Sox), HIPPA and many other federal regulations. If you use a VPN to connect outside of the corporate network - unless it's an approved connection, will also result in immediate termination as you've just proven you can not be trusted. If you want to check your personal email, do so during your lunch break on your own equipment or use one of the isolated kiosks in the break room.

    As a final change I would toss this electric car nonsense as the battery tech isn't there yet and instead build a true "people's car" which would be both a 2 door and 4 door model that had a 4 cyl and gets 40MPG for less than $10k. We would then offer a cash for clunkers style program so that all the working poor could trade in those old gas hogs for a much better vehicle for the environment.

    I'd increase that mileage to 60+ as that's what we'd already have if the damn EPA had continued with the Fleet Mileage standards instead of backing off 20 years ago. Keep in mind that 60 isn't that unusual for vehicles in Europe due to fuel costs, so why in hell don't we have the same thing? Nobody like Diesels and yet, a small 2 cylinder diesel setup as a hybrid could easily reach that or even push close to 100. You might even be able to do it with a single cylinder setup but I don't know if the weight savings would be worth the effort.

    which is why any good electrical/hydraulic engineer will tell you to flowchart the damn problem before even working on a solution(bug fix) or design. I've not seen any comments about flowcharting other then my own in the last 2 years on /. and it's annoying as hell. Flowcharting may not be glamourous but once you get into the habit of using it, you start writing better code and designing far more modular code because that unglamourous flowchart shows you where you can modularize you fucking code.

    I'm currently beginning work on flowcharting a Gentoo Feature (portage) so I can convert it to C/C++ in order to get rid of the damn python dependency. It's a god damn mess but once I've completed the damn flow chart, I'll finally be able to at least start fixing many of the fucking problems Portage has as it's by no means perfect.

    Buzz!!! Wrong Statement on the EU Patents not being enforcable in the United States. Due to Treaties, EU Patents hold the same validity as U.S. Patents do in the United States. Otherwise you are talking the exact same thing that China is being accused of doing; which is not recognizing patents from anywhere other then China. Pot meet Kettle. Simply put, if EU Patents weren't recognized, U.S. Patents wouldn't be recognized either, meaning an all out trade war as companies would steal any and every good idea and patent it in their area after some one else has done the R and D work.

    What they are attempting to prevent is those folks who buy the damn thing on Friday and return it on Monday as not being what they wanted. If it's being returned because it doesn't work, that's a different issue and should be gladly handled by the retailer as usual.

    because a TOS is not a valid contract is why the courts have ruled that it's a criminal offense to violate one. Contract law absolutely requires the ability to negotiate both sides, otherwise it's an EULA that is not recognized by half of the United States - the 9th district is in California IIRC

    I've got a 7yr old laptop that came with XP/SP1 on it and I'm getting ready to move it to Win7 permanently. During testing, the improvements that Win7 brought to it were impresive since XP/SP1 has accumulated lots of cruft/bloat from all the security patches/updates that have been applied over the years. Yes battery life isn't getting better due to age but usability does and from my standpoint, that's all that matters.

    poor baby. My linux started with Caldera 1.3 that the library had a copy of - Book/CD. That was back in 97 and CD Boot did work. Was really impressed that I could actually get my 33.6Kbps modem working (USR) with Enlightenment - very early yet it looked pretty nice compared to WFW 3.11/95a.

    Brings back some fond memory and I'll have to check my copy of that disk to see if the source code was available. Might just be worth seeing if it'll build with latest kernels.

    Well seeing as how I recently dumped FF 11 in favor of IE because of the damn devs deciding that I Need to Trust Every effen Root C/A before I can even add an exception - Like none of them ever got hacked. Sorry but MS at least gets it right in that the user/admin is in charge of the computer, not the fucking devs who's smoking/drinking god only knows what. Yes I'm a bit pissed at FF for screwing with MY Security Settings when IE9 at least allows me to do what I want, even if it's wrong.

    Don't forget what ever the hell the FF Devs are smoking as I just upgraded to 11.02 and they decided that if you don't trust a root C/A then you can't add exceptions to accept any certs. This completely fucked my security policy as I don't trust any C/A and am willing to add exceptions for those few sites that I absolutely have to trust such as my bank, merchants I frequently use along with several websites that offer https connections like Google and my ISP. Because of this change, I'm forced to use IE as I can still access those websites that are now blocked by FF w/o the ability to add exceptions. (error - connection refused due to untrusted issuer cert) was the message FF gave me and refused to provide the exception button. God Damn Devs. Think they control My Computer. Fucking idiots get kicked out the damn door as I refuse to use their P.O.S. software. So Long and thanks for nothing Mozilla. You used to be great but you've gone down the damn toilet like any other brown turd

    and that is why school districts require friending of specific people (HR/Legal) on Facebook. If they're posting anything inappropriate then it should show up where that individual can see/read/vet the posts. If they're contacting students on the sly outside of FB using alternative channels, then they have to rely on the parents and kids to report any inappropriate activity.

    In this case, the supervisor was incorrect in demanding her FB PW and if they had suspicions, they should have reported them to either the HR or the Police Depts who's job it is. Instead, the idiot has just cost the district One Million plus for a wrongful termination suit and the Union is going to be all over this issue in the next contract negotiations where it's going to be a firing offense for someone to even ask a member to friend them for anyreason at all.
