  1. Re:It's all a PR excercise by the ISPs on UK P2P Fight Brewing · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think you're spot on - it's a bit like the "TV detector vans" of years gone by (They claimed they could determine who was watching tv without a license using high tech vans but it was just a fake antenna on a van) The ISP's cannot realistically determine who is downloading copyrighted material - even a complaint from the BPI will not be proof that this is happening. I'm out of contract with Talk Talk so have just cancelled with them and I suggest others start to do the same.

  2. Maybe not so bad... on Microsoft Helps Police Crack Your Computer · · Score: 1

Ok - in principle I think this is a bad thing but.. We already know that you're guilty until proven innocent now - anything that can speed up the time from accusation to aquital for innocent suspects is a good thing. Also this development will hopefully put the brakes on the UK gov's plans for increasing the time you can be be held without charge to 42 days - their excuse was that it takes a long time to obtain computer evidence. Of course it won't take long for this device to be found on the black market - another reason to move away from Windows, or is the plan to brand anyone who uses a non-windows OS as a possible criminal?

A friend of mine is a silversmith. He recently completed a contract for a high class jeweler to produce some bracelets. The cost of the silver used was around £15 but the bracelets were sold in the jewelers store for £120. When he finished the contract he used the original design specs and some left over silver to make a few more bracelets which he sold to friends for £30 - so are these fakes?

Nvidia have a shamefully lax attitude to the stability of their drivers even under XP. Try searching google for NV4Disp.dll and you'll see that there is an issue that still causes BSOD's years after it was first reported, ironically the latest drivers only make the issue worse. This latest news will only make sure that my next card will not be from Nvidia.

  5. "War on piracy" on Is Copy Protection Needed or Futile? · · Score: 1

Quite clearly millions of ordinary law abiding people have proved that copyright laws, when applied to modern technologies, do not work. However, don't expect this fact to deter people with a vested interest to continue down the road of prohibition and aracne laws that are impossible to actualy enforce with any real effect. The fact is it will probably benefit the major labels to have a scapegoat like priacy to blame for their pooor results (see EMI shedding 2000 jobs today), it will benefit politicians to take an anti pricay stance and lure in those fat donation wallets that the labels have and it will benfit the ISP's who want to throttle any type of P2P use to cover up the fact that their infrastructure is poorly lacking. All in all it will benefit everyone but the actual consumers of copyrighted material who will always find a way to get it for free if they really want but run the risk of ever more draconian punishments should they get caught.
