Hey, I am German. I just find it amusing that the same site that is in English when I load it at university suddenly becomes German when I load it at work.
Yeah, if he thinks that's weird, he should try getting an IP address in the range assigned specifically to German companies. A whole lot of sites (Google, for example, and many ad networks) suddenly start talking German to you.
Please tell me how you can decide what a satellite dish is aimed at by looking at it. Do you expect them all to have big blinking neon signs saying "This is Big Brother watching you"?

What, pray, is not believable about official government statements and interviews with NSA people in the New York Times?
Now I'm not saying that Echeleon is a Good Thing, not at all, but you do have to admit that it really doesn't seem to target normal people. And the companies that are targeted really have the money to use encryption and should know better than to transmit mission-critical data unencrypted.
Because the link does show an explanation of the K5 crew of what's up. This wasn't a "total obliteration" DOS like the one against the bige sites some months ago. This attack only caused the site to be unable to work as a discussion forum because it was filled up with garbage.
Actually, it caused only the field to explode, but the blast would be strong enough to obliterate an area larger than the range of any lasgun.
Still, it makes any army using these shields rather vulnerable against suicide attacks by even a single enemy. Considering how frequent such things are in wars, the shields would seem rahter useless to me. Still, it was a nice way to reintroduce large-scale melee combat in a future setting somewhat realistically.
Damn, I forgot this: Plasma and force fields are what fusion reactors are made of, so this line of research could turn out to finally create the definitive clean energy source!
True, tilting at windmills is pointless. But it's equally stupid to deny the value of imagination.
Basically there are two different approaches to research:
Looking at the current knowledge and trying to extend and apply it
Think up stuff that would be wonderful to have and then try to find a way to get there
Obviously you don't think much of the second, but if you get down to it, it's just as valid and effective - if it's not overdone.

Spam pretends to work on the premise that it costs near to nothing to send 50 million emails, and that among the 50 million recipients, there's got to be a few people stupid or drunk enough to buy whatever you want to sell.
Of course, this is bullshit, because 80% of the 50 million addresses are invalid in the first place, so the real point is that Spam allows professional spammers to make a quick buck off companies stupid enough to believe the above premise.

The question was formulated quite broadly: "Is Unix capable of handling a database of this size".

So far, I see no reason to fear. I've seen stories drown in garbagr posts months ago, and the situation seems to have improved rather than worsened.
Only if one assumes that all politicinas are malicious. And that it turn says quite a bit about the people who elected them, i.e. you, doesn't it?
This su supposed to mean that everything the government does is bad, presumably.
You're from the USA, aren't you?

If 20 copies of this were posted as reply to each and every regular comment, it would render the site unusable.
Namely because MySQL stores its tables in files, and 64bit file pointers (necessary for files larger than 4GB) are still a hack job.
Should easily be able to handle this. And considering the size, anything less would probably not be a good idea.

Well, if they didn't think so, they wouldn't have done it.
I can easily see them doing it for reasons of favorable publicity.
What anbout the people doing Koffice? I should think they will find some parts quite useful.
Export filters, too. MY SO5.1 crashes when I try to export graphics as EPS, which sux because it's much more convenient than xfig.
According to dpa /stern.de, the license will indeed be the GPL. Way to go, Sun!
Bertelsmann (German) is pretty big too; IIRC they recently wanted to merge with Time Warner, but it was not allowed for antitrust reasons.
Ah, now I get it... I hadn't though of that, you're right.
