Well if you open your eyes a bit you're gonna notice that the distro's that have the stogest following are Red Hat and Debian and they are the strongest open source supporters.
The point of making NDS free software is that it would become ubiquitous on anything thant is not owned by Microsoft - almost overnight.
Q: What are these same companies contributing to these "core values" of Linux?
A: With the partial exception of IBM, nothing.
Sun had GPL'ed Star Office and is working with Helix to make it a part of GNOME Office in the form of Bonobo components. IBM has a lot of articles on it's "Developer Works" web site about how to program for GNOME.
But the most significant thing is that these companies have chosen GNOME over everything else as the next generation desktop environment for UNIX/Linux. This backing does a lot of good for Free software.
Outcast (http://www.outcast-thegame.com/) was released last year and it's based on a voxel engine. It's the best adventure game I ever player and if you can stand a little pixelation, it's graphics look like what Quake 6 will probably look...
Heck, it may be possible to swich the playback of evangelist TV shows just for a fraction of a second like in Fight Club and put images of penis' and sex for these right wing moralists that piss eveyone off! Imagine their kid's faces!!:-)
*evil grin*
You don't have to program it and you can skip commeercials. I think most channels now are at 8 commercials in a row. 8 freaking commercials damn it! If it weren't for the news, I'd have probably gave up on TV already.
Hum, hum I don't mean to be a troll gere but the rest of the planet keeps turning when something bad happens in the US. Americans have this anoying tendency to think that everyone want to be like them. Not that being an American is a bad thing but.. I guess most smart people have gotten my point..
I don't give a shit about C# but the runtime framework seems pretty interesting. The idea that you can use the same APIs in any language you like really scores big with me since I dscovered component programming.
Hopefully, Bonobo on top of CORBA will replicate this a bit since it's interfaces will be language neutral. I hope the IDL will somehow be wrapped in a template library or wizard because interface definition is what make component programming more complicated than it really has to be. Can't wait for GNOME 2!
I don't recall Slashdot being in a particualalu good place to talk about other's vredibility. It almost seems these days that there is at least one story in here that's full of content for a Slashback feature article.
You can miss name files all you want but 95% of Napster users are not gonna go searching for mnemonic strings just to be able to listen to something for free.
I don't know about CLI's but my company's R&D has been toying with most of Natural Language Processing libraries out there and the best results so far seem to com with QuickTag from Cogilex (shameless plug).
They have it both as a COM object and a Linux library and the price isn't bad for all the functionality that you actually get.
The porting of Tribes 2 to Linux is the best news I have heard in a short time (heh, the GPL'ing of Star Office was cool too). About the only reason I have kept a Win32 box around was to be able to keep playing Tribes.
For those not in the know, Tribes is multiplayer only shooter that came out way before Q3 and it fetures seamless indoor-outdoor, *huge* landscapes and an unmatched possibility to interact with you environment. It feels more like strategy squad warfare than a shooter. Like you're playing a RTS but you're one of the units.
When I heard they were using OpenGL for their brand new engine (which will make use of geometry acceleration that is now sleeping on our cards), I was secretly wishing for a port and now this.
Well actually, componentized code reuse implies that some interdependencies will be introduced. It's the same principle as dynamic libraries but at a higher level.
Ask anyone who knows his shit and youll be told that Matrox cards offer the best image quality. The G400 drivers are pretty stable and perform well. If you're not in a rush though, try to wait for them to release the G450 and G800. I wouldn't be surprised if the G800 is as good or better than the Radeon.
The *main* reason most languages out there don't get much attention is because they are not or badly maketed. If you're a windows programmer and have never had contact with the UNIX world, there is a fairly good chance that the only thing you've heard about functionnal programming is "this thing called Lisp that's good for AI".
From a maketing point of view, if you compare the success of languages like Java and Eiffel (cross platform stuff aside), you can clearly see that hype, buzzwords and nice little logos can go a long way into making a language known and used. I have also noticed that is you manage to throw in the word "revolution" here and there catches many a software engineer's eye.
I'm not saying that no one makes rationnal choices out there but that it's pretty obvious marketting goes a long way..
Cookies are implemented, it's just not working as you'd expect. I have tried to log in to Slashdot but it didnt seem to work. Then, I went to some other site, came back and I was logged in. Good thing I noticed it because I was just about to seize the occasion to realize my trolling fantasies! (bad for karma).
Actually, I'm a french Canadian.

I paid 100$ candian for it in Montreal (Quebec) at a computer book store named Camelot.

Thank you for posting what I think.

Then why don't you go to http://www.helixcode.com and download the graphical installer. It makes it as easy as using the Win32 smart update.

Check your facts, Slashdot doesn't use double click.

bye bye Win32...
Anyone care to enlighten me on what is an *inner* moon?
I agree with eveything you say but you made a mistake in calling it Free as in speech. The NPL is not a Free software license.
I may have 120 CDs at home but I'm sure not gonna buy the 50 or so MP3 encoded albums I have on my hard drive.

Hey ass hole, I happen to have an attention deficit disorder and I think you using an handicap to make fun of others is just plain idiotic.
