    no its not more secure either because if you are incompetent it doesnt matter what os you use you will always get rooted. if you are good admin it wont matter either because you will be able to secure your gnu/linux box.

    oooh wrong again , it was ibm + few others try at creating unified commercial unix on ia64/powerPC. this commercial unix was primarily targeted at sun who is right now dominating mid-server market with solaris.

    well not on my system. it does crash like 1-2 times a day (usually because alla java popups coming up while i'm surfing pr0n :) but it never takes down window menager with it....

    and gnu/linux doesnt ??? and when it comes to solaris, linux is always going to beat it on low-end hardware (x86) so as private person you will never need anything better than gnu/linux , netBSD or FreeBSD

    uuh, i just hope solaris port of ie is like 100x better than hp/ux port, because from what i heard is that ie used to crash window menager on a friends hp/ux system.

    heh dont hope for too much, i talked to this guy that tested ie on hp/ux (yes there are ports of ie to hp/ux and solaris) and he told me that it made his window menager (cde??) crash all the time....

    are you running libc5 netscape on glibc system ? libc netscape used to crash alot on my glibc 2.1 system untill i installed glibc netscape from unsupported directory on ftp.netscape.com.

    projects that map comets/asteroids wouldnt benefit from extra cpu time. what they need is extra telescopes. i believe that more than 50% of new asteroids/comets discovered are discovered by amateurs. we need to get ESA and NASA doing more in this field.

    because european market is probably bigger than us market (europe has like 350 million ppl while us has around 260 million ?) and microsoft doesnt want to loose such a valuable market, so they are probably going to do whatever eu wants them to do.

    99% of nasa missions are succesful. just because media blows up those 1% unsuccesful missions doesnt mean that us govermant should shut down nasa. i really didnt except /. to start spreading fud about nasa.

    original BSD was UNIX, however nbsd/fbsd doesnt contain any code from last BSD release (4.4 ???? ) thus its not UNIX.

    hmm i heard it somewhere too, they were not sending false data but same units twice or more because reciever at areceibo was fucked up :(.

    anyway its known fact that seti has more processing power than units (over 2 million ppl), so get over to distributed.net, join slashdot.org team and search for coulumb rulers (ogr project) :)

    not any of the free unicses (gnu/linux , nbsd, fbsd, gnu/hurd, obsd) is "real" unix because none of them is certified as UNIX(r). general missunderstanding among *bsd ppl is that *bsd is unix while linux is not.

    btw i think (not sure) that there is some group working on certifing gnu/linux as UNIX(r). i believe it costs at least 10 000$ to get this certification....

    he is probably not going to use ext2 anyway. oracle uses its own raw partitions/filesystem to store its data. this speeds up oracle and avoids 2gb ext2 filesize limit.

    so gnu/linux + x86 can be good choice :)

    hmm i forgot to mention that runlevel 2 is default runlevel in debian, it might be 3 in mandrake ( i think redhat has 3 also). if this is a case edit /etc/rc3.d (/etc/rc.d/3 in rh ????) instead of two.
    havent used any other distro than debian for 3 years now so thats why i dont know what default level rh/mandrake/suse... runs in.

    1) remove all services you dont need (edit /etc/inetd.conf and remove services from /etc/rc2.d/)

    2) you might want to install ssh to avoid connecting to your box via unencrypted connections from outside

    3) you might want to install portsentry so you can see if ppl are scanning your box (you can let portsentry automaticaly add them to you firewall)

    4) you might want to install logcheck (aka logsentry). it will mail you as soon as it finds something strange in logs.

    if you do all those four things i guarantee you that 99% of crackers will not be able to get into your box and rest of the crackers (1% those who are not script kiddies) wont be intressted in a home system from some random guy.
