corel office isnt part of the free software/open source community. its commercial office app
staroffice still isnt (but is going to be if we can trust sun) free software package. after they gpl it, it should be trivial to get support for staroffice files into abiword.
actually it is fifty years but i am not sure that this rule applies to movies.
i believe that this rule applies to script. for example i can go out and record elvis songs without paying any royalties but i cant get songs where elvis is singing (those same songs i'm recording) for free.
russian economy has never been stronger because of increasing prices on oil market. it has nothing to do with checnya, industry in checnya is ruined.
and btw yes russia came first to space. but that doesnt matter. both russians and americans stole german technology. without german v2 rockets russians nor the americans would be in the space in 50-ies and 60-ies
there is a arm support!!! have you ever actully tryed any of these ? it seems to me that you have based your opinion on linux portability without even trying it.
here is a list of architectures debian is available for: Contents-hurd-i386.gz --> x86 debian with hurd as kernel
Contents-sparc.gz@ --> sparc debian with linux as kernel
Contents-i386.gz@ --> x86 debian with linux as kernel
Contents-alpha.gz@ --> alpha debian with linux as kernel
Contents-m68k.gz@ --> m68k debian with linux as kernel
Contents-arm.gz --> arm debian with linux as kernel
Contents-powerpc.gz@ --> powerpc debian with linux as kernel
Why do you think Boeing uses a Russian rocket for its Sealaunch programme?
because russian "proton" (i believe its their name) rockets are currently most advanced/can get most kg's into space. there is nothing that can be compared to them.
so goto dcypher.net and start working on gamma flux project. here is some info from their page "One of the big unsolved problems of mankind is the final storage of radioactive waste and substances that the latter half of the century produced in weapons of mass destruction, power plants and research labs. These highly hazardous materials will be a liability for generations to come, even if we decided to abandon fission here and now.... you can find more info on it at http://www.dcypher.net/projects.shtml. btw there is actually some benefit out of rc5 project. there have been very few publically documented projects of brute force cracking of large keyspaces so this one might help us to understand brute force cracking a bit more. i agree with you that ogr project is more beneficial for human society.
problem i see with dcypher.net/processtree is that they will only take in projects that someone is willing to sponsor (that way we will all work for big companies). i'll rather work on some non-commercial project and contribute to the development of the science in the world than work for some commercial company for small chance of getting any money.
how about creating special site for slashdot team in different distributed computing projects? something like Anandtechs homepage on different distributed projects. i would be happy to donate my free time for such project:)
here in sweden, one of telco companies (telia) is offering some kind of voice over ip telephony. this thing is called "mikrosamtal" and is much cheaper than ordinary telephony. right now you can only call outside of sweden with "mikrosamtal" and quality is somewhat worse than ordinary telephony but i'm happy to use it because i get to pay 50% less for every call. most of the time you dont even hear difference. so voice over ip works.
computers at uni and computers in classrooms in high school/grade school is whole different thing. 3-4 years ago some idiot decided that every classroom at our highschool should have 2-3 computers in it. imo this was stupidity because whats the point in having computers in classrooms where you learned philosophy, biology or psychology. computers should be placed in computer labs where you can go when you need computer. eventually they realised that noone was using those computers in classrooms so they decided to create extra computer labs.....
last gnu/linux distro i bought was redhat 4.2 since that i have been using debian (downloading it from net). i prefer to spend my money on linux games from loki:) (even if i can easily download them from warez sites....)
> OpenBSD installs are secure by default, whereas most other OSes (including Linux) aim to be featureful by default okay i agree with this one (more or less).
> Even a "crappy" admin who installs a vanilla OpenBSD is in a better position than one who installs a vanilla Linux, since lots of work has been doen for them. agreed. obsd takes somewhat better care of ppl who should not be running *nix anyway:)
i think you misunderstood me a bit:) my point was that openBSD is not more secure than gnu/linux if you are good admin.

thats not the point. my point was that linux is portable !!! its not more portable than netBSD but another thing

i agree with you, i was just answering your question :)
debian has x86, powerPC, sparc, alpha and one more (dont remember its name). those 5 platforms account for 99% of all hardware being used today.
can someone please explain me why this guy was marked as troll ?
wtf have copyrights to do with distributed computing projects like rc5 (distributed.net), gamma flux (dcypher.net) or seti@home?
get a clue!!

uuh?
distributed computing doesnt have anything to do with distributed databases
he should let portsentry add scanners ip into ipchains, that way he is not blocking his site for legitimate traffic
just add them into your firewall and they wont bother you......

well old or not 90% of lokigames exists for ppc, some games can even run on sparc and alpha....
> Do ANY of the games from Loki run on LinuxPPC or YellowDog?
how about civilisation ctp, myth2, heroes of might and magic, EUS, rairoad tycoon2 gold and few more
moderators get a clue
