And perhaps set your SSH port to a non-standard port, where possible? Brute-force attackers seem to ignore high (> 1023) ports.

You missed the point of your own reference. The more refined something is (say, gasoline) the more energy is required to get it to that point. That expended energy lowers the absolute efficiency. If I remember correctly, for every gallon of gasoline produced, the equivalent of a gallon of gasoline is consumed in the refining process. That's pretty inefficient. Diesel has a better in:out ratio. Natural gas is the most efficient petroleum product because it doesn't need to be refined at all.

All this means is that well-behaved packages (and users) won't accidentally exploit this bug, but it doesn't take away the fact that the kernel shouldn't allow the exploit.

The statistics are probably not faulty, your interpretation is. I think the intended figure is 10 percent of households, not people. You're not looking at 30+ million units, but instead less than 10 million.

Education costs are bound to rise over time, in comparison to everything else. Certain sectors of the economy cannot make productivity gains in the same way others do.

When you compare 12 years of education to a the price of a car over time, education looks more expensive over time but really may not have changed in absolute cost.

Think of it this way: the time required to build a car (or most any other widget) keeps dropping, and bankers can make more money with the same staff than before, but it still requires the same number of musicians and minutes for an orchestra to play a symphony as it did when that symphony was written; police officers still walk and drive the same speed when patrolling a neighborhood; and it still takes 12 years to educate the average student.

TFA lacks hard, useful information - it's like the author didn't really understand the subject that he reported on. Now I worry about the hard content of the other news I read in the Times.

There are a few concepts but nothing useful that tells us anything about the future internet. I wouldn't lose sleep over this.

Shifting your automatic into and out of gear while the car is in motion isn't a good idea, unless you LIKE paying for transmission work. An automatic transmission is not just a manual transmission with an automatic clutch. Also, engine braking will not cause significant wear on your engine. It's like saying that leaving it in gear while it's parked causes undue strain on your engine and/or transmission. Your car is designed with much greater forces in mind than just standing still. Save your brakes for when you need them, the engine will hold it's own.

I think it's more a case of wanting to use the tools at hand, rather than laziness. Would you want to build a house without power tools, if they were available? Wouldn't you be frustrated if those power tools were laid out, but everyone said that you may not use them because someone else doesn't know how?
