What about seatbelt laws and helmet laws?

Those are becoming increasingly common in the U.S., and the only purpose of such a law is to protect you from yourself.

We have (unfortunately) an increasing amount of precedence for giving our government the authority to protect us from ourselves.

    Not so fast...

I know a few women who have chosen Nursing because it offered flexible hours and strong job security...and they seem to think Nursing provides a healthier lifestyle that way.

Programming jobs tend to be project and deadline driven, and it's very difficult to even carve out 1 week for vacation without risking some project you are on.

Nursing jobs tend to be a little more interchangeable, and that makes it easier to work around an employee who wants to take a lot of time off or go on maternity leave. (This is what I've been told anyway. I'm not a nurse.)

  3. A shortage of GOOD workers? on IT Labor Shortage Is Just a Myth · · Score: 2, Interesting

Reading all these comments...there seems to be a common theme that "There is no shortage of IT workers, just a shortage of good ones."

Why is that? I'm really asking because I don't know. Why are the majority of practicioners of our profession bad? This doesn't happen with other professions does it? (doctor, lawyer, etc.)

I have a couple of theories:

    1) Working in IT requires constant learning and keeping up on the latest technologies. People who already work 60 hours a week and have families just don't have time to keep their skills current. They trust their companies to keep them trained, and the companies let them down.

    2) There is no consistent college preparation and certification like there is for every other professional field. I'm a software developer who has a Computer Science degree, but most other developers have MIS degrees, Math degrees, Engineering degrees, no degree, etc. Lots of people who are clever "coders" are actually poor overall software developers.

    Anyone have other clues?

  4. Unfortunately this sounds reasonable on Bandwidth Caps May Be Critical Error For Broadband Companies · · Score: 2, Insightful

Time Warner already has caps on bandwidth where you have to pay extra to get their "Turbo" speed. Capping the total volume used per month is the next logical step. The majority of the American people (i.e. not tech-savvy Slashdot readers) only need 5gb per month and would be very happy to have a lower bill. The wireless carriers will never come close to the raw speed of modern cable. Geeks will hate wireless and the wireless companies will soon learn to hate geeks for hogging bandwidth. The wireless companies will eventually have to cap their service as well.
