Pascal is a bit verbose... but Borland's Object Pascal is a great fit for event driven apps that have to talk to databases.
For this particular type of application, Delphi is great. For example - you can get a pointer when you need to, but you don't have to drown yourself with them all the time.
While your point about Windows 2000 and Windows 98 are relevant, a machine that shipped with Windows XP or Windows XP SP1, when fully patched, *would* be running Windows XP SP2. Service Packs are patches.
Sort of.... BUT SP1 and SP2 are so large and touch so much of the OS, I would consider then almost seperate versions of Windows. Especially SP2 - it's changes a lot, almost more that the transition from Windows 2000 to XP in some regards.
For stoftware validation and testing - I would certianly consider SP2 a seperate OS.
In other words, he's running all this on an unpatched XP machine.
The same problem happens on:
A patched Windows 2000 Machine A patched Windows XP SP1 Machine A patched Windows XP Machine A patched Windows 98 Machine
To get browser security from Microsoft requirs a user of Windows 98 to spend $100 to get XP and then spend the next two days trying to install it and getting it to work right with his scanner/fax/printer.
Or our Winodws 98 friend could just download Firefox.
Why Microsoft wont realease a standaline Internet Explorer for its old systems is obvious: The want to suck more money out of people. And they suck.
If Slakware can update thier browser - why in the fuck cant one of the largest companies in the world do the same?
If you want a preview, ask the citizens who have been our allies for decades what they think of our President.
We'll that depends. I respect the opinions of your average Canadian or Australian. But I hold the opinions of Germans, Frenchmen and Russians generally in low regard. They're not exactly good judges of leaders. After all they and their leaders, though acts of war, mass-murder and colonialism have managed to kill millions of people of the last 100 years.

In the past century, the more intelligent, educated, and ambitious people have migrated away from the farms to places with more opportunities. The less educated have stayed behind. Those who live in rural counties are less likely to read, and therefore are not well-informed.
This is why a lot of liberals get stamped with the elitist tag.
A linked list is just a container, so yes, if you're using your linked list - pointers will eat a bunch of space if you're storing small bits of data.
But then again, you don't have to use linked lists. The C++ standard template library has all sorts of wonderful containers that may be better suited than simple linked-lists. Java has some neat containers as well.
You can set an intermediate machine at that location for RAdmin to bounce off of.
You can do this with VNC really easily - if you can log into *any* SSH server behind a firewall, you can setup a tunnel to any inside VNC enabled desktop:
1) SSH into a remote server. 2) With OpenSSH - at a blank command prompt type the SSH escape code: ~! 3) At the SSH prompt type in: -L 5940 192.168.0.40:5900
This sets up a tunnel on your computer "localhost" from port 5940 to the inside computer at 192.168.0.40 to port 5900 (the VNC port). 4) Log in with VNC: Tell it to connect to localhost or 127.0.0.1 at port 5940. With RealVNC and most other VNCs at the computer prompty type in: localhost:5940 5) login and enjoy.
With PUTTY - you can setup the tunnel unig the nice GUI.
PS) Don't forget - if your remote SSH server has Samba, you can type in: nmblookup AComputerName to get the ip address of any Windows computer.
The Drudge Report is nothing more than a Republican mouth-piece for mud slinging. Why would this load of crap from Drudge surprise anyone, and why would anyone pay attention to it?

I'd like to see a day where you had to answer a five question multiple choice test about each candidate you vote for, and if you blow more than one, NO VOTE FOR YOU!
Good luck!
Some people in Florida were so stupid that they failed to punch their voting card properly. Let alone answer 5 questions.
I sometimes agree with your sentement - but unfortuntly such tests have historically been a used a bludgeon against the less powerfull.
For example: we use to have a literacy tests - but all to often they were only used to exclude minorities.
You don't get BSOD's on XP, because XP is set to reboot instead.
[from http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php]
Right-click on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab. Under "Startup & Recovery," click Settings. Under "System Failure," uncheck the box in front of "Automatically restart."
Do that, and you'll see all the typical BSOD's that you've been missing.

Hmm, George W Bush, a .4 trillion dollar deficit and growing. Which country are you talking about?
You made a funny!

Microsoft supported Windows CE on the SEGA Dreamcast. Then they stabbed SEGA's back with the XBOX.
Microsoft support's Windows CE on the Gizmondo.... XBOX Portable must be just around the corner.

After serving for two years, each Swiss adult gets a free semi-automatic assault rifle to take home. And a few cases of ammo.
Crime is low in Switzerland. Very low.
or can putty handle both ends? If so, rock on putty.
Unfortunatly no. Putty is just a ssh client.
But... it's pretty easy to add an sshd to an XP/Win2000 box:
basic info
Cygwin/SSHD info
SSH tunneling is far from a QED solution to your average Windows admin, believe me, I know from hard experience in trying to explain it. Heh.
;)
Quite true. Most Windows admins still miss NetBEUI
Putty does have a tunneling system - so you don't have to setup Cygwin/OpenSSH if you can't wait for it to install.

Can I play my currently owned windows programs on an iMac?
Yes. Virtual PC 7 ws just released from Microsoft.
No baiting going on. I was just trying to point out the old saw " A broken clock is right twice a day."

Samsung bought OpenMail off of HP - after HP decided to kill it. Samsung ran OpenMail and liked it so much..
Samsung will happily sell you a copy.

Because of this, I believe our democracy is on a downward spiral, and I'm not sure what it's going to take to send it back up...
That's easy - better education.
It would be hard to fuck over a population of literate, intelligent and thoughtfull citizens.
Alas, our education system sucks. Kids these days know more about political correctness than they do about simple logic.
