I've been travelling for about the last year and bought a mavica to document my trip. It's done everything I could ask for.
Are the pictures as good as some other digicams? No, but the floppy disk format more than makes up for this shortcoming, at least in my circumstances. I can't lug a laptop everywhere I so, so storing the 1.5 m files created by 'better' cameras is just impractical. The other advantage has already been touched on by someone else. The floppy disks work with just about any computer, so no matter what the cyber cafe in Podunk, Ireland or where ever is running, I can get pictures to people who would want to see them.
If you're the kind who wants to take professional quality pictures, you'd probably do well to look elsewhere, but for my 'on the road' usage, I don't think the mavica can be beaten.
Wow, at my very own school no less... I'm sure Washington (and London, Paris, Sydney, Bejing, and anywhere else) will continue to be domineering old fuddy-duds for some time. It won't be until people who actullay know the internet start to become politically active that we'll have governments that will make sensible decisions.
Sure, right now there are millions upon millions of people on AOL or Freeserve or whatever, but how many of them have a clue as to what's driving their porn sites and backstreet boy webpages? Or that these sites are branding their computers with cookies to track their viewing habits? Or that there's some guy who wants to stick their name on thier browser's history and sell it to advertisers?
Very few people have any idea about the kind of stuff going on. It's unfortunate, in a sense, that governments are so representative of the mundane majority. Someday it'll be better. Maybe.
Perhaps Trey & co. should take their own advice on bitch - 'Step three: with bitch drop the 't' cuz bich is latin for generosity.'
Fart is stupid. Who doesn't say fart? You can't very well say flatulence in a song. What real word rhymes with that?
They (ABC) have a point with fuck. It's one of the seven deadly words. It's not ABC's fault that Tipper Gore and the rest of the Washington big wigs have their head us their asses (bums?). But honestly, will the government revoke ABC's liscence for this?
This could be the ultimate solution right here: The show usually runs well past 10:00, right? Why not reserve 'Blame Canada' for a more appropriate hour? Then fart and bitch wouldn't be in question (I assume).
So what happens if someone toasts the groom with a railgun or something? What's to stop some of the low life we all encounter from spamming the ceremony with the usual 'F#cking lpb camper fags!' insults that so frequently litter the servers I've played one. Maybe that's what the PAK takes care of... Anyone know?
And just, what is wrong with a person having the right to defend his family with wal-mart purchased napalm grenades? jk.
True dat to most of your post (except for the over used demagogic limosine lefty cliche's. "demagogic" is a term for beliefs that fall on the liberal-conservative spectrum of heartstrings, which libertarians tend to ignore in favour of looking at the mechanics of an issue, but we can't all be perfect). I think it's unfortunate that we see a lot of posts snowball their way to the top, but who gives a toss, realy? So some schmo has a higher 'karma' rating than you. Who's added more to the community? Who can goto bed at nite knowing that they did their part (start battle hymn of the republic here)? And who doesn't have to wory about going to hell for starting a new thread while quoting from another one, just to be noticed by the moderators?
In truth, those who screw with the system here or brown nose their way to high ratings may have a higher level of karma on/., but their karma in real life probably damns them to a reincarnation as a starving child on a Sally Struthers commercial. Just keep fighting the good fight. You'll get your due.
On another note, it's neat how people who bitch about the fact that their messages are likely to be moderated to a sub-zero rating often find themselves with 4's and 5's. Just goes to show that reverse psychology is real and that moderators are, in fact, lemmings.
Less than 24 hours of slashdot making it into the 'big leagues' and there's already someone begrudging others their success.
I think the fact that VA Linux layed out a big wad of cash for slashdot and it's andover brethren probably means that they're going to try and keep the good stuff coming. If VA Linux just wanted ad space, they'd advertise. Purchasing internet companies is a significant investment, and turning andover.net into a valinux.com mirror would just be stupid.
I think we should wait for a few weeks to decide whether this is good or bad.
Teen chat rooms across AOL should all smell of stale cigar and unwashed 47 year old men in their boxers trying their quadruple bypass-ready hearts out to convince one another that they realy are "14/f/anal queen of your dreams" and not dirty old men.
I wonder just how much of this study was intended to 'find facts' and how much was for the purposes of open-source back slapping. Not that Linux isn't good. It is. What would be realy helpful is if the mainstream media would pick up on these things and run with them as we all seem to do.
Many guys I knew in college spent 5 semesters constantly being online, not just a mere 5 days.
I think it's interesting that you say they only spent five semesters online... Are we to assume the last three weren't completed? I know I'm running that risk at times.
As for the article, I think it was rather weak. He tells us about maybe an hour's worth of his day. I think I could've used less information about his B.O. and more about the little adventures you go on everytime you try and find something new to do or read online.
Suppose a popular icon commits murder. A guilty verdict would "tear the social fabric", possibly sparking riots. Should the trial be cancelled and the verdict be "not guilty" because we fear this consequence.
In honoring Frank Zappa one must not forget that GWB Jr.'s daddy (or daddy's people) was the one to effectively remove Zappa from his position as Minister for culture or something like that in the Czech Republic (there's a whole neat story about Zappa's influence on the resitance movement there...).
As for the Gore article, I thought it was pretty crap. He came off like someone's mom trying to sound hip when she walks in on her kids' conversation. He should stick to what he knows - kneepads and spotted owls.
I think the notion that Gore is a techno-whiz is a load. The most complicated thing he's ever done is use MS Word, not that any of the other candidates are any better. We should just stop kidding ourselves by thinking he knows what he's talking about when he say "ALT CONTROL DELETE."
I don't know that Democrats are alone in bowing to wealthy companies for money (Republicans are just as bad with tobbacco, et all), but this administration in paticular has shown poor judgement in raising money (some say even pedalling influence to the highest bidder, as in the whole Indonesian banks investigation going on now). I don't know that enough people care about whether Microsoft fries to make an executive intervention cost Gore more than what Gates can give him.
I hope the other heavies in the race don't bend to the pressure of dirty Microsoft money. I've already heard rumours floating that the people in Redding are hoping for a GWB Jr. victory because he's likely to end the investigation. It sounds a bit grim no matter which frontrunner you look at...

But then there's the time zone problem...
I tried...
