I actually do a lot of numerical modeling, and I do some rather cheezy little things to take advantage of as many cpu's as I can find. But because I'm not a CS student I don't get access to many fast machines. I've been lucky enough that I can break up my problem and fit the data on to a floppy disk, drag it to the computer lab late on a friday night, beg for 6 machines and let it run a few hours. But to be honest it'd be very nice to get an my processing down in minutes not hours. Right now, my data set takes about 20 hours to process on a pent III 550. I've profiled it a lot and thats about the best I can do.
hmm, underneith ie, from a shell it looks like unix, but as far as i can tell its setup as single user. The GUI is not exactly like anyhting else i know of, but not totally unlike X. It boots really fast, from POST its maybe 14 sec. on a cel.333 with 64MB. It uses a 64bit FS, is geared to media production or uhm at least using lots of multimedia stuff. I can't really find a whole lot i can mess with meaning, i can't find config files i'd like to. But I don't really use it much, just wanted to see what its like. It is very fast.
You know someone could genetically engineer some of this stuff, maybe make it a bit more eff. or something and then patent it. If they made it hostile toward others or something we could be screwed. I mean think, a hostile O2 producer that is owned. It would certainly be almost terroristic in nature to release such a thing.
But i don't really think thats the case. I think it just didn't show up in the normal lineup.

Uhmm didn't I just read about this a few weeks ago here? This is the second time recently you've run the same story twice.

Microstation is a widely used CAD package. I believe a linux version has existed at least 2 years maybe longer.
