  1. Re:Move over to IBM? on Sun Apologizes To Blackdown Team · · Score: 1

I dont think IBM is the company that it used to be. IBM has fired most of those upper management suits that they used to have in the 80s. IBM in my opinion has trimmed alot of fat. They no longer hold that tyrannical software/hardware hold that is so popular with Apple, and Sun. Not to mention that they still do cool stuff (unlike Compaq and dell who just make money)..

You see that is the problem with sun they are just like apple. They have good, yet overpriced hardware, and and closed system that requires there os to run on their computer (like apple). Its funny that both sun, and apple follow the old IBM model for computing.
Give me linux, and the bsd brothers anyday (open, free, and net).
At least I wont have to worry about my development tools being ripped apart. Java was such a cool technology and Sun had to go mess it up multiple times. Anyway....:(

  4. This is great, just what OpenSource needs... on Upside on CoSource's Leap of Faith · · Score: 1
I think this is a great idea for a number of reasons which I have listed below:
    1. Pumping a little money into OpenSource may be just the edge to give most projects a little polish. Giving developers an *excuse* to expend for commercial tools (example: photoshop, CodeWarrior for linux etc...)
    2. Just becuase money might be involved doesnt mean ppl will do it for solely for money. It would be pointless to program opensource exclusively for money, commercial outfits pay far more in comparision.
    3. This monetary incentive might allow some developers to cut some hours from regular (e.g. commercial) work and spend that time on opensource projects.
    4. I highly doubt that the quality of opensource would go down. There are still two factors that govern the quality of opensource projects. One is that most programmers have hubris, and their code is going to evaluated by their peers. Two is that opensource projects are rarely done by one person.

This is the one concern that I have. Would this interfere with the GPL licensing in anyway, and what about project deadlines? Opensource usually doesnt have project deadlines. Would this allow penalize developers who dont *ship* on time. Lets hope it doesnt become just another boring job.

One last note. I am constantly surprised by the quality, and vitality of many opensource projects :)
    Keep up the good work.

Are these algorithims Opensource by any chance? I looked into voice algoritims at one point, and it made my run back for my knuth book. I never found any real source for it. It is a fascinating subject and I am sure the opensource community could do a fantastic implentation of it. :)
    I stop rambling now.

I have had really good experiences with that MS Natural ripoff keyboard. It has a little Touchpad below the space bar that is great for the times when I really have to use the mouse. It allows me to keep my fingers on the keyboard, and not have to play the ol' switching game all the time.
On the hand it also allow you to use your existing mouse for stuff like games (e.g. Quake 3). Anyway just my little post.

  7. paper vs digital information on Oz Government to Become "Biggest Hacker in Town" · · Score: 1
Isnt this really scary to some ppl. What if Australian site mirror and/or cache a website from another country does this give the Australian government the right to change, or modify the contents. Also this is a personal gripe of mine. I have not seen a comparision of digital documents to paper documents. What is the difference between making a photocopy of a document and copying a digital file. For example:
I have a manuscript for a novel. first case: I typed on an old fashioned typewriter and have is stored in a safe. second case: I have typed my manuscript on my computer.

What is the difference, between the two documents other than the media on which they are prepared.

Whats next, and where does it stop!!
