Heheheh hey did anyone notice who was depositing the money in the .org bowls. I assure you it wasnt .com linux distros. There is one thing that I have noticed in life, from being a paperboy when I was a kid. Rich people with fancy houses, nice mercedes cars etc... wouldnt tip me crap. But when I went to the middle class family struggling to make and bringing up 4 kids on 12,000 a year, they would give me a $10 dollar tip usually. Now I bet most of the contributions in those bowls where from your average hackers, and joes, and not from the corporate people. It just goes to show how badly money corrupts.

Actually the best thing I have seen so far is the ports collection for FreeBSD, extremely user friendly, all compiled all optimized, dependencies get resolved, it is pure heaven

Come on give me a break Torvalds has to pay the rent somehow, not to mention that he is slamming Torvalds, it isnt Torvald's company he isnt the CEO, or even the CIO he is an engineer(a brilliant famous one), but still an engineer, he doesnt have control over what Transmeta does with it products. If a comapany is going to spend the time to moderate and filter out the crap from public domain speech and put the data they feel important on their media then more power to them. Anyway that is what people have done for years, the media never correctly portrays the full scope of any particular subject, just what people want to hear.
Hell even Slasdot does it. So again I ask what is the point of this article..... none really, its just some guy blowing crap out his mouth trying to sound pretentious and just, when he is probably just out for personal glory....

I think the biggest strength of this product is luring developers who are used to a GUI into Linux, and OpenSource development. A lot of developers a deterred from participating in OpenSource projects due to having to learn a set archaic compiler commands (which I love).
A Lot of developers that I know havent even created their own makefiles before. They have done all of it with VisualStudio, or CodeWarrior on the Macintosh.
CodeWarrior isnt a replacement for good old gcc, but it is a bonus perk for people who want to get up to speed quickly in the type of development environment they are used to.

This industry is more chaotic than others. I think that more attention needs to paid to early computer education, on the grade-school level. People need to learn general copmuter theory in gradeschool not college.
A standard Bachelor's degree takes around 4 years, I am sure that slashdot readers recognize the changes that can occur in time period. Personally I am a college dropout, but when I go back to finish I am not going to major in something other than CS. (probably architecture)....
Most computer systems and applicable uses for computer stem from existing integration with other technologies, like financial systems, where a degree has more weight. Computer programming requires more than a degree, it requires intelligence, innovation, dedication, and hubris/pride in your work.
Some of the best programmers/developers I know dont have degrees in CS.
It seems that alot of people who get CS degrees fo it for the money, and not for the vision. For them its a career path so they can buy there new luxury SUVs, and get there screaming brats cell phones, and gap clothes.
The marketplace is changing, employees no longer care about employees as much, cradle to grave is a joke. The new workplace is dynamic and fast paced, and the people that will excell in it are people you adapt to change, IMHO opinion college is to rooted in traditional work values to teach that.
I will end this rant now. Dont get me wrong college is great, and it is a *neccesity*, but in the computer industry CS arent as relevant.humbly end rant
