Been disabled on my company laptop for three years running. I've only seen two things affected by disabling the server service - 1) I can't connect to my machine from another for file tranfer (works the other way around) and 2) Network administration cannont take control of my machine or access my hard drive....sad
EA is not stupid......
EA downloads from Torrents all the time -- they use the torrent tracking totals to provide their lobbyists with "Huge Pirating Totals" to get DRM legislation in Washington.......
I'd do the same thing if I were them and blame the "pirate" industry when a sub-par product doesn't produce. (i.e. RIAA Business Model)
Install the game -- install NODVD crack, remove Securom from registry and rootkit - game plays fine.
Its a shame we have to buy games for their online keys, then install a NODVD and remove Securom to fully enjoy the game.
Did the same for Spore - My big gain is I have full resale value with all the activations.
I do the same thing - with high traffic on my DVD drive from my games, my wife's games and my kids games -- the NO_CD or ISO emulator saves untold wear and tear on my legally purchased games - the original disks stay pristene.
The dreaded - "unable to read media" error is non-existent for me
I say let'em review every single electronic device we have, ipods, computer, phone, hearing aid, pace maker and watches. It will take a week to cross a border or take a plane -- the economic reality is a far greater deterrent to this kind of ludicrous action than all the belly-aching complaints.

Encrypt two volumes
one legitimate one - i.e business docs
the other - your real encrypted data - if they see you have TrueCrypt - show them your legitimate volume.
You can save any extension so they'll never find the encrypted one - unless they want to spend a couple hours in windows explorer....

Most common discussion in the jury room during deliberations - "I woulda shot him in the kitchen...vinyl floor is a whole lot easier to cleanup..."

Same problems - different solutions:
My first step now on a brand new Vista machine is to use my current XP SP2 DVD (fully patch slipstreamed up to aug 07) install disk with all the BTS driver paks (http://www.driverpacks.net) installed via nlite (http://www.nliteos.com). After I delete the Vista partition and reformat, I end up with a sweet XP installation with 98% of the drivers installed with no issues (be sure to have the correct SATA drivers on the install DVD).
This procedure has worked just fine on the last 14 computers I've installed XP on over the last 3 months -- I use the legitimate user's XP license on the installs as the original machine is dead or dismembered and they did pay for a legitimate license on one machine.
10, 20, years from now -- I'd like to see how old the professor is -- I bet he was copying Cassette tapes like mad when he was in college but he conveniently lapses that memory to strike a blow for the Recording Industry and maybe pull a grant or two.
The music industry has been stealing from performers since the 30's -- If you were black, your music was not played in public and purchased for peanuts and re-recorded under white performers and they became mega-stars.
Copying has been "okay" since the technology existed, 8-tracks, Cassettes, even CD's - its just the Internet has provided a "mass market" for trading and now, suddenly it's not fair to the RIAA, etc. People, including the Professor's generation have been copying for over 30 years........
Morality is a steady measurement - its been the same since Socrates days -- only the noble cry unfair when peasants hunt their lands for food.

Let me check my machine -- hmmm... fully patched to August 2007
Automatic updates turned -- OFF
Automatic update service -- Disabled
Firewall on High
Hopefully I'm protected from the OS authors, who are looking out for my best interests - It only takes one disgruntled ex-MS employee to communicate the stealth backdoor to the multitudes.
Its a shame Autopatcher has been bullied into submission -- I trust them more than MS
"Vista is selling well" - pure spin -- why not check on the huge number of requests to MS to down grade to XP -- actually from a cash flow analysis this was a good plan -- make users pay for two OS's -- I have personally loaded XP on over 24 laptops (lots of friends and relatives) that were recently purchased with Vista installed - I used all their mothballed legitimate XP licenses (everyone has plenty of those lying around) and now the machines fly.
I don't care about lawyers and subpoenas -- how about something user-friendly - I'm a hair's breath from Linux

I'm in your backyard getting my cat -- your house is on fire -- sure don't want to call the Fire Dept - I might get accused of trespassing.
