The problem in the KT case was, KT provided a pre-compiled binary that everyone assumed was good. Binary. Not source. Binary. Get it?
And... just how are you going to compile anything? Unless you're pounding out the binary from scratch or something, you're relying on someone else's binary. BINARY, not source. Example. You come home, install Red Hat, FreeBSD, Slackware, whatever. You now have a whole bunch of binaries on your system, for you hope aren't backdoored. You have the source? Well that's fine, but you're still trusting that the binaries on your system actually DO correspond to the source you're looking at. That was the original poster's point.
I really don't envy the man. Apparently he'd very much like out of the CoS, but he's such a cash-cow for them that they won't let him go without causing all sorts of trouble for the man, threatening family, whatever.
I'd like to believe this arguement was true, but I'm afraid I really don't. Travolta is a very well-liked actor. He's not seen as the best actor in the world, but he's well-liked, in the same way that Harrison Ford seems to be universally liked. If he quit Scientology, and they started harassing him, that would generate a huge amount of political backlash against the "Church." Him quitting would damage them greatly, but the damage would be done -- there would be little reason on Scientology's part to harass him, especially considering the consequences.
I haven't heard of him wanting to leave (again).

I believe that the IRS revoked their tax exempt status, declaring that they were a for-profit corporation.
I wish that were true, but unfortunately, according to the IRS web site, the Church of Scientology is still on the tax-exempt list.
The guy who played Chief O'Brien in the Next Generation and Deep Space Nine was in a few Gargoyles episodes as well. Kindof interesting how it seemed to be such a big Star Trek series. }:>
Are you kidding me? 99% of the people who post on Slashdot hate Christians outright.
Wrong.
See that's the problem with you Christians. When people point out inconsistencies in your belief system or suggest that it is immoral or barbaric, your persecution complex kicks in and you interpret the criticism of your religion as an attack on YOU, as "hatred" directed towards YOU.
This is almost an ad hominum attack. The original poster is exagerrating obviously, but he has a point -- I'd have to say there's much more antagonism against Christianity here than there is in... say, society at large. You need a persecution complex to see that; it's simply obvious. I'm an agnostic, and even I am somewhat surprised at the Christian-bashing that goes on around here. };>
I cannot see how he can square support of Microsoft, which is without a doubt the most unethical and dishonest corporation I've ever encountered (based on personal, firsthand experience, not hearsay), with standing for Christian principles.
It could be, like so many famous glitzy Christians, that he's actually a hypocrite. He whips out the rhetoric when it suits his political purposes, but doesn't care to follow through. See: "Sunday Christians."
Being narrow-minded and bigoted as many of the so-called Christians that I know is far more Anti-US IMHO than being atheistic.
Actually, from my experience, being a narrow-minded bigot is a popular US tradition. Sure, people would like to make it anti-US, but... well, that's not going to happen anytime soon.
Of course. Kiddie porn is illegal not because of the morality of the ideas itself, but that someone was victimized in the process. I'll say it again: kiddie porn is illegal because of the victimization. No victim, no illegality. It actually does make a certain sense...
Wow. That's a pretty good point. My guess would be:
As has been said before, they needed stealth above all. Eagles flying in would be a pretty visible force, and I seem to remember those things the Nazguls were riding were supposed to be faster than eagles. They would be intercepted before they could reach their destination, especially since Mt. Doom was rather close to Barad-Dur.
And don't forget that Orodruin was polluting the skies so much, obscuring everything up there. (Almost like flying through an eruption. See the beginning of the RotK).
Have you learned nothing from Columbine ? Quake was responsible for that. How many deaths must Final Fantasy cause before the American people wake up and ban it ?
In the mean time, concerned slashdotters should boycott it, and any stores which stock it.
You make some good points, but clearly you do not go far enough. I suggest boycotting any stores which stock it, along with any stores which employ anyone whom has ever played one of those games. After all, you never know when one of those crazed Final Fantasy junkies will go nuts and start laying waste with the patented "Rhydia whip" or impale himself while trying to weild a rediculously oversized 6'x1'x2" steel sword.

Yeah, let's criticize the people who have risked their lives to uphold our freedom.
Exactly, because someone who risks his life can do no wrong and is clearly above all reproach. Perfect.
Ahhh yes... this post exemplifies most of the "karma whore" posts. People who know they don't have anything good to say so they attack those who do.
The charge isn't even logical in this case -- the original poster said something that seems to go against the grain of the "Slashdot majority," so he stands a better chance of getting moderated down instead of up.
Not just a feeling for me; I've heard it from the horse's mouth, the mighty Richard Stallman himself, quoted telling (threatening?) commercial software developers that he'll put them out of business. "Spite" is the right word.
Isn't this the tack Microsoft uses as well? How often have they threatened (though usually more privately than Stallman) to completely destroy a company, to crush them? It's not an MS-hater thing.:)
I don't question about the "like to code" people. It's just that sometimes I get the general feeling that some people do OSS stuff to SPITE commercial software.
I haven't found this attitude in any of the OSS coders (myself included };>) I've worked with. But I have seen it to a fair amount in a good number of Linux advocates though. The "revenge" aspect seems more prevalent among those who don't code than those who do. Those who do code simply do it because they like the environment and enjoy what they do.
Of course, some FSF zealots do share that "destroy commercial software" mentality, but most OSS coders I've met don't buy into that.
Yes... if they ever get any more in. }:/ They're always out when I check, and I haven't gotten any notification of new supplies, even though I signed up to be notified awhile ago...
The only reason cybersquating laws are so strict is because of the malicious people who forced companies to spend millions of dollars to purchase domain names that they should rightfully own.
No one "forces" a company to pay anything. The company chooses to. Why should Coca-Cola have the "right" to coke.ch?
if someone took my company name and named a channel the same name, I'd sue
Channel? As in IRC channel? You'd sue over the title of that? How cheap and petty can you get? (Not to mention suing over irc is pretty pathetic in itself). Not even the king of litigation, Disney, has gone that far.
But jesus, are we still in the days of VAX? Big servers are great and it's useful for people to share them, but everyone ALSO has a decent desktop box.
Again, the problem is that you're assuming everyone wants to run the X client applications FROM their desktop. To demand that would be pretty limiting.
Why on earth do we need our computer to talk to itself through networking calls just to render a window?
Why? Portability for one. Second, why not? Since on the local machine you don't have to use actual TCP ports to get it done, I've seen XFree86 use domain sockets instead. Is there really a huge drawback other than a "networking! *shudder*" response? You don't have to limit the server to only one method of contact.
... along with OS transparency (display one OS's graphical applications on the screen driven by another OS) are X's greatest strengths. There are many people for whom direct/hardware calls would be useless.
My setup: Two computers, one running Windows, the other running Linux. Linux is my "big server," it's where most of my files are stored (served by samba) and where I get much of my "real work" done. The monitor is connected to the Windows machine, and when Exceed runs in full-screen mode, there's pretty much no difference between that and running X from the Linux console. That kind of flexibily is what I love about X, and removing or dumbing down the network aspects would just kill the whole point of it.
It'd be ok for running the few games available, but you'd be sacrificing much more to gain that. Assuming "get the X protocol away from network protocols" is even necessary for that, a statement I wouldn't agree with.
Uh.... we live in really hard times? Yes, so much worse than when millions of people died fighting the Nazi's. Or when the population of Europe dropped by a third during the black plague. Or when thousands of Americans were shipped off to fight a war they didn't want, only to be spit upon when they came back home. I could give so many examples of just how much things sucked at just about any other point in history also.
Face it, things are pretty good at the moment, comparatively. Don't believe the doom and gloom of a media who wants your attention. Try not to look in old 50's sitcoms for the perfect society which never actually existed.
There's nothing wrong with escapism. To say that a topic on Final Fantasy shouldn't be approved because there might be children reading is just rediculous.
Get into some bands who release worthwhile albums as opposed to single/filler albums. Hint: you're not likely to find them on the radio.
Exactly. Shitty bands release albums with maybe a few good songs and filler. I like listening to good bands, and all the CDs I've bought from them have been worth (almost) every penny (then again, I don't go to Tower or the Wherehouse, so I don't get that gouged on price either).
This has really been going on for a long time. MUCKs and MUs are fine examples. I have been on a certain MUCK for years now, and it is very common for males to play the part of female characters, and sometimes females to play the part of male characters (among other *things*). Some play it for the day and that is it, but there are some others who have played out the lives of these characters for years. Close friends tend to know, but some have had these characters without another soul ever knowing.
Aye, I'm a mucker as well, and the operative word in the last paragraph is some. Ie, some people get away with it, but for the majority, it is fairly obvious when someone is playing a gender that does match up to their player. };>
Are females on muds, mucks, irc, etc treated differently? Yes and no. They get hit on more often, that's for sure, but other than that, I haven't noticed much of a change.

How much would you like to bet Scientology won't be labeled a cult, even though it is?
