  1. Internet in the Philippines on Social Changes & Internet Access In The Third World · · Score: 1
The first time I used the web was back in 1995. Back then, most of the internet access were concentrated on large corporations and only techies and affluent individuals could pay for their own dialup. I bit the bullet then and singned up for one and 'had to dialup long distance since ISP's then (there were only 3 then) were concentrated in Manila (I lived in Cavite, a suburb south of Manila) -- this is common for developing countries were everything happens in one place.

Anyway, I went back late last year and I was quite at awe that ISP's have mushroomed all over the country. I borrowed a friend's dialup account and voila! No more long distance dialups, and rates are getting more and more competitive.

My only concern is, Filipinos are religious fanatics and when the leader says something, the flock follows. Most religious leaders (more like pigs) see the internet as the work of the devil -- a source of pornographic materials. They are currently working with public pigs (gov't officials) on censorship and banning internet in schools.

The internet is changing the Filipino society. The established companies (monopolies) are now being threatened by startups -- something that I think will bring competiveness back to the (pig controlled, crony-infested) economy. I just hope startups hold on and resist on being bought out by one of the large-monopolizing companies.

    stay cool.

Basically, their just have a modified version of lnxwin that shuts down Windows then starts BeOS. Also, I found this while plowing thru the FAQ... Q: Does this mean BeOS runs "under" Windows? A: No. Although you can launch BeOS via a file within Windows, BeOS does not run as a Windows application. Double-clicking the file will exit Windows and boot BeOS from a large file in the FAT file system which contains within it a BFS volume. Q: If I install BeOS 5 within Windows, will I still have the advantages of the Be File System? A: Yes. Q: Will I have to run Windows to run BeOS 5? A: No. Although we will offer an installation as described above that will allow you run BeOS from within Windows without repartitioning your hard drive, you will still be able to run BeOS as a stand-alone operating system. Q: If I install BeOS 5 within Windows, will performance suffer compared to the stand-alone version? A: Assuming your Windows partition is not highly fragmented, in most cases you probably won't notice a difference in performance between installation methods. Q: Will I be able to install BeOS 5 within operating systems other than Windows? A: Not at this time. Note, though, that if you don't use Windows, you will be able to install BeOS as a stand-alone operating system as described above.

That's exactly my point. Given the same work effort, there's a greater opportunity for a life that's aspired by most individuals in 3rd world countries -- a more convinient life with accessible social services.

I'll do a quick lowdown of the expenses for an average family:
    0. House Mortgage (assuming you don't live with parents anymore) = P10,000-P15,000 (in a subdivision in Southern Manila -- Las Pinas, or even Cavite)
    1. Private School (since PSI is not that accessible to most, and I don't want my kids to even try public education) = P20,000/hr + daily expenses + books
    2. Monthly car loan payment = P10,000-P15,000
    3. etc.
For a bachelor, US$600/month is well enough for gimiks in Makati and (ehem) Quezon Ave., but how about for families starting from scratch?

In the Philippines, developers with 2-5 yrs work experience who grok Java, C++, OOAD, RDBMS in Unix, NT, Solaris, and Linux (plus COM, CORBA, etc) get paid 4-5 time the minimum wage. Sounds big? NOT! Mininum wage is about US$125/month. So it's around US$500-US$625. With the same skill set, you can get $9000+K/month (average) in the Bay Area/Silicon Valley. But cost of living in the Bay Area is unbelievably high compared to other states. (All values are before tax)
