Ok, this may be flamebait, but it seems to me that women for the most part think that what is right in any given situation is to be determined on the basis of how they feel at the moment. I've experienced enough examples, firsthand and second. But then again, I guess I'm wrong because I happen to be male.

Why is it legal for a coroporation to do such things, but when a lowly "hacker" uses the same techniques the "law" jumps all over him/her? I don't care what the protocol was, you could make a case that this is just as much of an unauthorized access as anything else.

You mean that a guess always results in a mine going off in your face? I thought that was the way minesweeper was programmed in the first place! I've always had the sneaking suspicion that it just makes random decisions on whether a mine is in the space you just clicked...

Oh, I don't know about that. With our education system being as shitty as it is, misspellings and grammar problems would give me more reason to think that the poster was American.

Just out of curiosity, would you consider using a stolen credit card number to make purchases "stealing from a bank"? I would... Although I admit that the card holder is often the one held responsible so the bank can cover its ass.

You know, I've been wondering about the whole "federal funds" thing. When did the Federal Government get the ability to distribute money to the states in the first place? The reason I ask is that the new Drunk Driving law that Clinton just signed is effectively an act of blackmail. States must redefine their definition of legally intoxicated or lose federal funds.
I'm starting to think it'd be better if I paid higher state taxes and lower federal taxes. It appears to me that the Federal Government is using a non-constitutional method to keep the states in line...

The funny thing about that is that a move in the fourth dimension was necessary to get the sofa to a position that it could not be moved to in three dimensions. You've gotta give props to Adams for clever thinking on that one.

And furthermore, what guarantee do you have that they'll purge your information from their systems once you terminate service? If they decided to change their policy to the point where they could share info with anyone, and you terminated service, could they still share the info they have on file?

On a more meta level, the lit crit set actually study persuasiveness and persuasion for a living. They are experts in its techniques and uses. So why not make persuasiveness the basis for all scientific discourse? If everything in the sciences becomes a matter of who has the most witty barbs in the social scene, or whose critiques are the most cleverly worded, or whose syllables-per-word average is the highest, then of course the lit crit people would win. You can't blame them for trying.
Great. You mean Socrates died for nothing? Look everyone, the Sophists are alive and kicking!

I dunno. I think the thing that disturbed me the most was the idea that Windows deletes icons from your desktop and status bar if you don't use them often enough... Sheesh. I set things up the way I want them, and then Windows comes along once again and "helpfully" screws everything up for me. I think this little "feature" is going to cause as much irritation as the paper clip does.

And they'd have seen much fewer initial sales. For the most part, people look at the initial chunk of change that you have to lay out to take the product home. Few initial sales blows their business model out of the water, so they would not have been in a much better position.

Whoah. That was weird... WhenI first read that, I clearly saw "Anyone armed with a medium length (40-64 bit) RSA public key that they don't use?" Sleep dep hallucination or insight into insane governmental nomenclature?

So incrementally destroy the file and note when it stops working. Analyze that point, and you should have clues as to where the watermark is and its characteristics are. Repeat until you have all the pieces. Simple, no?

That still won't be enough if we get the sort of networked nanotech from Diamond Age running, though. From my reading of the book, you could easily see densities that large on any given day...
'Course, Stephenson was delightfully vague on how networking tech worked, so individual nanites probably didn't have IPs per se.

Yeah, interesting point. Don't the promoters give the radio stations several copies of the album in the hopes that it'll get airtime? So the stations get the CDs for free, but pay for the right to broadcast. Does this strike anyone else as a bit strange? --Fesh

Good point! Concerts for these sorts of bands are definitely more of a visual experience than anything else. If you've already bought copies of the music, you won't hear anything different, because the "artists" are just dancing to recordings of their music. And with the concerts being exhaustively choreographed and scripted, there's no incentive to see more than one. I think this is where the strength of the Grateful Dead comes from, in that single concert was an independant work of art. --Fesh
