  1. Commodity hardware grows mature. on Dual Caches for Dual-core Chips · · Score: 5, Insightful

Daul core microprocessors are not a new development. IBM with their POWER4 and POWER5, HP and the PA-RISC 8800, and TI with their OMAP processors are definitive proof that multi-core solutions are not just a stop gap in increasing the performance delta of modern silicon.

Daul core processors are a natural evolution in the development of general purpose and even specialized computing devices. SMT was to be a boon for the EV8, but later found its way into the Pentium4. Multiple logical processors were just a first step.

It should be interesting to see just what AMD can do with both SMT and a daul core design.

It just had better run BSD. = )

I'm familiar with the Kit that HD rolled out last Thursday and Friday. I spent 13.5 hours last week From the night of the 12th to the morning of the 13th breaking down terminals, and replacing them with Compaq PC's running Windows 2000 Professional. I also helped in reconfiguring the WAPs that are used by the mobile carts. Lots of new Cat5e was run all over the place.

The hardware is the Compaq Evo D510 series, including the Small Form Factor, and the Convertible Minitower variants. The majority of these sytems are of the SFF variety runnig Intel 1.7Ghz Celeron (P4 Willamette w/128KB L2 cahce) processors. The machines in the paint department were the CM variant running 2.0Ghz (P4 Northwood w/ 512KB L2 cache. I believe that all of these systems were equipped with 128MB of DDR SDRAM.

This hardware wasn't cheap. The software.....may have been discounted but may not have been. Who knows... I was just a rented "Tech Monkey" to deploy this Kit... Personally, I think that it was a "bad move".

The overtime should be nice though... It really sucks to have been unemployed for the past six months... Jacksonville FL sucks.

  4. Plan of attack. on Virginia House Passes UCITA · · Score: 1

We have NO choice. We must stop UCITA.

It will not be easy...for the entities that were are dealing with have vast fortunes at their disposal. Their goal is to use the very technology that we helped in creating to enslave ourselves to their oppressive corporate hegemony.

I for one will not stand idle as this government of the people, for the people, and by the people perishes from the Earth.

We must start with our local Linux Users Groups (LUG's). Locally, LUG's must bring the battle angainst UCITA to the attention of the local mass media. In most cases this means Newspapers and Broadcast Telvision News agencies. UCITA scrutiny from the public in general, not just us geeks who are in the know. Peaceful demonstrations should be encouraged locally.

Colleges and universities are abound with those who are trying to educate and axpand thier minds. These same institutions have a vast dependancy on technology. We must bring UCITA to the attention of all colleges and universities in the states that we reside. Students that will probably be most interested will be those enrolled in Computer/Engineering fields. I could not imagine any Computer Sciences division at ANY educational institution to support UCITA.

Local and Statewide petitions must be organized and presented before state legislatures in all fifty states. Demostrations and protests will be key to this. In two days the largest peice of "floatware" will be launced. This is very short notice... but the 17th would be a great day to contact news organizations and let them know how Microsoft feels about maintaining personal freedoms and liberties.

We must hit them hard and hit them fast. We will NOT get a second chance. Goodluck and Godspeed.

  5. MediaOne....time to die. on Saving MST3K · · Score: 1

Well, even as I write....Mediaone is laying broadband cable into my neighborhood just outside of Jacksonville, FL. Normally I wouldn't have a problem with it all, hey, afterall cable modems will no be a viable connectivity option. BUT THOSE GREEDY BASTARDS TOOK THE NASA CHANNEL OFF THE LINE UP!!!!! I live in FL, I watch the shuttle launch, I watch it when it lands. I really would like to watch while they build the International Space Station {With the help of Linux,of course =)}. It think it's time I went down to the local MediaOne branch office and gave them my two cents worth.....then I'll rip their occuressd Co-ax from my under my lawn.
