i found a link to get SP2... but when i ran THAT, i got a message saying that "while ALL components had successfully downloaded, installation was NOT successful. close all applications and try again."

so, i've shut down everything but explorer and systray, and i've tried 5 fucking times, but the service pack installation cannot complete successfully.

and these damn trolls WONDER why people hate this company so much...

CMYK has been the print standard for a lot longer than adobe has been in business. comic books, magazines, etc... all use CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) Until the print industry starts using linux, i wouldn't expect the GIMP to handle CMYK. Having said that -- i would expect that a good vector tool would have to be developed for linux BEFORE the print industry would even think of using linux (is there even a bad one yet?). So i doubt we'll see CMYK on the Gimp any time soon.

i'm fairly certain the post-er knows damn well the connection between B5 and harlan -- in fact, the post clearly demonstrates a pretty thourough knowledge of harlan's career. that's what made it funny.

    You're right
    it SHOULD work both ways.

the big problem there is that the the government already blew that out the window by allowing CORPORATIONS to exist at all!

that french term, coined by Joseph Smith, means LEAVE ALONE.

as you say, the government leaves business alone, and that *should* work.

but by allowing HUGE MONSTROSITIES to behave as INDIVIDUALS, we've created a NIGHTMARE!

"capitalism" isn't the problem, as capitalism DOES NOT EQUAL "corporatism."

what i'm trying to say is that corporations are unnaturally created and fostered by "business law" and that corporatism FLIES IN THE FACE of the laisez faire concept.

check out what robert anton wilson has to say about that.

    bacteria are doing,
    and that's a BAD THING.

    scientists broached this topic.)

  6. Re:Canticle... on A Canticle for Leibowitz · · Score: 1

As a (recovering) Roman Catholic I'm fascinated by the doctrinal implications of the end of the book. If the Pope is Christ's Vicar on Earth, what happens when we inhabit another planet? Does someone get to be the Pope of Mars, or will he just be an archbishop? I haven't read the sequel so I don't know if Miller ever addresses those issues. The doctrinal discussions I had with my Benedictine and Holy Cross teachers at the time were very entertaining but we never really came up with a solid answer.

if this interests you, you should really check out The Sparrow and Children of God by Mary Doria Russel.

people of earth discover radio signals from a "relatively" near star system, and the JESUITS are the first group to really respond.

not only was the treatment of the jesuit order just fabulous, but the detailed views into the inner lives of the clergy was some of the most original and interesting reading i've ever been exposed to. Russel shows all these priests as real people who are concerned with real human issues: sexuality, economics, power, authority...

as a "recovering catholic" myself, i found this "real" portrayal of the "inner lives" of priests to be most fascinating, and heartening...if i had read an account of the clergy like this in high-school, i might still be an active catholic.

    but probably not.

i'm not sure i noticed the "human" figures walking in TS2, so i take that as a good sign-- if you DON'T notice, it WASN'T screwed up. i DO remember that that was a particularly noticeable flaw in the first, which i still loved a lot. i'll have to pay more attention the next time i see it.

the "toys" walking, however, i always took as purposely stylized...woody and buzz look, to me, EXACTLY as they should when they walk--very much like a rag doll and plastic sci-fi toy.

but yeah, i thought the skin was a HUGE upgrade from the last flick. and the human "hair" was better, too. though i'd still like to see improvement in that regard. i was under the impression that it couldn't be done any better, but then i scrutinized a "coca-cola polar bear" commercial last night, and i realized that the fur on the bears is handled much better than anything i've seen in the TS movies.

of course, a 30 second spot is much easier to create/render than a feature film ;~)

and my 5-year-old loved it almost as much as i did.
