The Kindle Fire and the Kobo Vox, while being far more versatile than previous models, completely miss the point of an ebook reader. If I wanted to read books on an LCD screen constantly stabbing my eyes with a bright backlight, I'd read on my Android tablet, or my laptop. The reason I bought one of the first gen Kobo ereaders is because of the e-ink screen.

I'd wager I had a more statistically significant sample space than one phone over the two years I worked there (that comes out as far more bitter and snide than I intend it...). Most of them weren't visibly obviously jailbroken and on the occasions I asked, the customers didn't even know what jailbreaking was, or why anyone would need to do it. In may ways, Mackay is a very isolated community.

I certainly have inflammatory and biased opinions on occasion, but I don't "troll" for any reason. Even if nobody else believes that, it's the one bit of integrity I maintain on the internet. My statements may be wholly based on anecdotal evidence, not rigorous statistical testing, but I'm commenting on a summary of a news article, not writing a scientific paper.

iOS does need to reboot every couple of days. When I was working in a phone shop this was the kind of thing that happened so many times daily that I lost count each day. Someone would come in "my iPhone is slow" or "my apps are closing when I open them" or "my iPhone has frozen on the home screen". *SIGH* Don't ANY of you people read the manual, or try GOOGLE?! Hold the lock and the home button for about eight seconds, it should restart. Next please. *SIGH* Lock and home, eight seconds, go away.

  10. Honeycomb on Android 4.0 Source Code Coming "Soon" · · Score: 3, Insightful

The only reason they didn't release the Honeycomb source wasn't because of some shift to evilly exploiting the open source community (*cough* DARWIN), it was because it really really wasn't intended for phones. Google likely didn't want manufacturers hacking it into running on phones and giving a largely unsatisfactory experience. They always said this, and people still suspected Google of shifty evil motives. The ICS source being the unification of phone and tablet branches should keep people happy for a while...

Summary is blatantly incorrect. Google Reader will still function standalone. This is about incorporating Google Reader into G+ for people who're already using it (So Google employees, Will Wheaton, Felicia Day, and me). What will change on Google Reader is it will lose whatever social bullshit it had before that I wasn't using anyway; which were actually added after Google Reader's inception in response to social hives of bickering and misinformation like Reddit. In other words, those who liked bickering over politics and science with their degrees and diplomas from Google U and Wikipedia Community College can still do that, over on Google+; those who just want to read their damn news can still do that, without Google+

I'm no astrophysicist, but I'm sure they could find an affordable way. Likely involving ballutes or space planes. I say "affordable", it will obviously be expensive to manufacture in space and get the output back to Earth, but you have to consider what it would cost, or if it's even possible to do some things under Earth gravity. Offworld manufacturing won't be some amazing new thing that breathes life into the economy, it's just another possible money source. It's up to the people who need stuff made to decide if it's ultimately worth the expense.

  19. Re:Waste of time and money on Is the OMB Trying To End Planetary Exploration? · · Score: 1

I'm just saying, in a capitalist democracy, money talks, and consequently votes. What is space WORTH to the US Government? What money can they make from it? What exploitable resources does space have? First, the obvious one: space. Offworld residence, tourism, storage. Not much reason to go into low earth orbit right now though. Second, space doesn't have a great deal of gravity. Zero-G manufacturing of larger equipment, for instance, is something that can't be done on Earth. Thirdly, you have mineral resources. The only way the US Government will invest in space is if they can get a financial return from it.

The government's running out of money, and reinventing the wheel (and face it, unless you're changing the energy source, that's EXACTLY what this is), is the real waste.
