  1. A slightly different question... on Ask Slashdot: What's the Best MP3 Encoder? · · Score: 1

Due to a combination of work/university, I can't listen to my favourite radio show (Mark & Lard on R1 in the UK, if you're interested). I've tried all sorts of hacks to record the show, from taping it onto video cassette, to the current method of encoding it using the Realplayer 5.0 codec (Real seem to have removed the command-line interface with G2, so I can't script it). What I would really like to do is encode the show (2 hours long) into MP3 format, in real time (at a low bit-rate, obviously). Any ideas? Linux options preferable...

  2. But will it have a wobbly RAM-Pack? 8-) on Sinclair Does Linux · · Score: 1

I've still got an original 128k+ Spectrum at home..the memories 8-).

It would be great if Sinclair could finally get another success under his belt, as all his projects since the Spectrum have flopped. This project sounds quite interesting...

  3. What about other countries, why here? on Voices From The Hellmouth · · Score: 1

I wish I could answer your questions, but I have no answers. I too have posed the same questions over the past few days, and most have completely ignored them. From my understanding - life is completely different outside the US. Whether friendlier, or less focused on pop culture, the atmosphere is completely different.

I'm sorry, but this is not just a problem in the USA, although it might be more visible. This mental torture certainly happens in the UK. It happened to me, it happened to my sister, and it happened to my friends. It's not a uniquely American phenomenon.

  4. Wow on Voices From The Hellmouth · · Score: 1

would be interested to hear from any UK posters whether this atmosphere has developed in schools there
    - it certainly didn't exist when I left school (12 years ago).

From what my sister tells me (she's a Year 9 student), and from my own experience of pre-Sixth Form school, I'd say that this type of atmosphere is thriving in the UK.

  5. Jack Valenti is cool! on Bootleg Movies for Download · · Score: 1

Why didn't he show off his amazing cheeks? Curse you, WB, for cancelling Freakazoid!

I can't really see the point of this. Yes, its free, but VCD is worse than VHS (at least it doesn't pixellate). Plus the cinema is a great social experience 8-).

"Now if the film is rated NC-17..."

  6. Guns on Why Kids Kill · · Score: 1

However, Switzerland's gun laws are very lax, and yet I haven't heard of any massacres there recently. Wasn't it illegal for them to be carrying the guns (my knowledge of US gun law is patchy 8-))?

Oh my God, I sound like a spokesperson for the NRA. Was it them who suggested that if *everybody* had a gun, then this wouldn't have happened? MAD for the Millenium, baby 8-)!

  7. MS Audio 4.0 on MP3 Dead? What, Already? · · Score: 1

Has anybody seen MS talk about this? Apparently it's their MP3 killer. It supposedly offers twice the compression factor of MP3 and better quality (I'll believe that when I see it). And naturally it will be supported by Media Player first. http://www.theregister.co.uk/990312-000 013.html has some info on it...

  8. I still can't believe... on Stan Lee Comics Save the Net? · · Score: 1

...that Marvel kicked out Stan. It's like sacking
Walt Disney being fired from Disney, or Steve Jobs being fired from Apple...oh.

In a year or two, Stan might be able to buy back the remains of Marvel...if Time Warner doesn't get to it first (which would be fairly cool)

  9. It's the NME... on Music Industry scores the closing of www.lyrics.ch · · Score: 1

Kind of strange that it appeared in last week's NME as their featured web site, and now it's disappeared...
