  2. Re:My solution on Stealthy Windows Update Raises Serious Concerns · · Score: 1

If it really is possible to redirect access to the windowsupdate site using the HOSTS file, wouldn't this be a huge, gaping hole ready to be exploited?

If $nefarious_program changes/adds host file entries to redirect the Windows Update service to their own server, who knows what kind of damage could be done. Even if the Windows Update host was redirected to 127.0.0.1 the normal, average user is never going to know this... effectively blocking future security updates. A round or two of missing MS updates effectively would leave all these machines wide open to new exploits.

Since I no longer have a Windows box to test this HOSTS file redirection, I can only raise the question whether this is true or not.

VMWare is exactly suited to this application. Run the browser, and any other applications virtualized. Save a base install of the O/S immediately after completing the installation/patching, and after installing the applications that need to be used. That way when something goes wrong (and it will...), just copy over the clean virtual disk image.

Well, the second and third button are so easy to use that I don't really care. Put two fingers on the touchpad and tap the mouse button -> you have clicked the right button [...] This applies to Windows and Linux only. Two fingers on the touchpad while tapping the mouse button works just fine in OS X as well.

I would open source it if I could... unfortunately the source is on some very ancient backup tapes. Besides the fact that I have no hardware to read the tapes, I don't know if they are even readable anymore. They haven't been accessed in 15 years. :(

Nowadays I'm an IT director, and also manage a team of 6 doing embedded work. Since I only need to deal with ~200 users and 6 servers, it often leaves plenty of time to get my hands dirty with code. I've done work on things from writing handheld PC-BIOS compatible x86 code, kernel development on ARM platforms, Windows CE/Mobile platform development, and most recently development in (gasp) ASP.NET and C#.

Feel free to contact me at ghatchew - at - xtremepcr dot com, and I'll do some digging to see if any source is salvageable.

  8. What's the Motive? on Paramount to Drop Blu-Ray for HD-DVD · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have to ask myself, what's the motive a studio would have with going toward HD DVD technology vs. Blu-Ray?
It seems to me that they are trying to steer towards a format that contains half the data storage capacity with the goal of having yet another format go obsolete sooner rather than later. They must make a ton of money when people re-purchase titles on a new format. Soon these same studios will be 'crying' because they don't have enough data space on a disc, therefore they have to push a new standard.

  9. Re:NASA on Spirit Outlasts Viking 2 Lander · · Score: 4, Insightful

It's called "managing expectations". Someone at NASA decided, "Let's tell everyone we're only expecting it to last 90 days. If the thing craps out, no one will have expected it to last longer. If it lasts longer, we'll be praised by all the geeks on /."

The intent of making the article tag for accessibility is good. However, you know that people are going to start wrapping their advertisements in article tags, defeating the noble goal.
