    That's because drugs they test for are illegal.

    And it's not illegal to test for illegal drugs simply because you have no defense. You can't use unclean hands to fight it.

    It even has probative value as a demonstration of your willingness to follow orders and directions, which includes obeying the laws that make drug use illegal.

    China selectively enforces its rules and laws in favor of its own companies and against foreigners.

    Trying to get a fair shake in china is rather like playing against a team that, in addition to having a home field advantage, has all the refs on their own payroll.

    Part of "Don't Be Evil" is "Don't Cooperate With Evil"

    And after their recent run in with possibly state sponsored hacking of political activists in China, they should defnitely be wary of trusting even the government.

    Not to mention that simply even holding this information, even under lock and key, is an invitation to the information being hacked and leaked, both by crackers and covert government agents alike.

    Notice that they tried to delete the data, but were ordered by the governments to preserve it and hand it over.

    Seriously, unless they have something that establishes he used a computer in furtherance of a crime, they have no business cutting him off from the vast majority of society.

    Thing is most people's informed decisions fail to take into account the trustworthiness (or lack thereof) of a business that has a vested interest in breaking any sort of privacy promise they make to you.

    It's in facebook's best interest to lure you in with promises of shelter from the public, and then whip out their TOS to throw you under the bus by reselling your soul to the advertisers.

    What bothers me more is that governments are using this breach as an excuse to make google cough up information to the authorities that they'd otherwise have had to get a warrant for.

    You stop exporting IP, people just pirate it. You stop exporting rare earths...people suffer.

    Unfortunately, China has the real stuff, and they know it.
