  1. Re:Newspapers: A necessary waste? on Newmark Denies Craigslist Is Killing Newspapers · · Score: 0, Troll

Do you honestly think the government is worried about newspaper journalists? The journalists know if they publish anything too bad, they will be put on no fly lists, probably not get press passes, and whatever else the government thinks it an get away with.

  2. No kidding? on NYT Editorial Slams ISPs Over Online Freedom · · Score: 5, Insightful

From TFA: "Last January, Representative Christopher Smith of New Jersey reintroduced the Global Online Freedom Act in the House. It would fine American companies that hand over information about their customers to foreign governments that suppress online dissent. The bill would at least give American companies a solid reason to decline requests for data, but the big Internet companies do not support it. That shows how much they care about the power of information to liberate the world." Really? The companies don't support the law? Gee that's strange. Why wouldn't they want to be stuck between a legal order to hand over information, and a fine if they do? That law may be a good idea, but it drastically cripples American companies.

  3. Get their attention on Effective Use of Technology In the Classroom? · · Score: 1

Technology is a spectacular tool for getting attention. Shiny bits, movement, videos of explosions... All things technology does well. Other than that, it is often used as a replacement for leaning math than a tool. Use it to grab the kids' attention, then teach them the old fashioned way, then go back to moving and shiny things every once in a while, to keep them paying attention. (This written by someone who slept through 80% of his pre-calculus class because the teacher was too boring, and couldn't keep my ADD infested attention span. That class got repeated in college.)

  4. Clear Expectations on Transitioning From Developer To Management? · · Score: 1

The best advice I can give is be clear, consistant, and explain yourself whenever possible. Make sure that the people you manage understand what is expected and why. One of the most important traits a manager can have is that the people under him believe what he tells them is reasonable, true, and trustworthy. And noone is smooth enough to keep up that impression indefinately unless it's true.
