...you get a bunch of designers trying to come up with something cool:
A website that can basically only be viewed by broadband users
Pop-up windows that confuse the user (I mean...come on: "boo.com has been launched in another window. Nothing happens on this page, except that you may want to bookmark it.")
Avant-garde web design. While aestheitcally pleasing, it just doesn't work over the web.
SoftRadius GSM Data Software Suite from Option.com (just a small cable and some software)
It's pretty good...I can connect from virtually anywhere, run all my TCP/IP apps and send mail of course. 9600 isn't that bad...it actually feels faster dues to some data compression.
This would work fine in Europe, with the European version of the Nokia 6190. The only caveat is that you pay up the wazoo for international calls (from Europe to the U.S.).

One other thing....how do you possibly survive in a world where most of the values you consume are created by the very people/corporations that you hate?
For Christ's sake Jon...are you ever going to grow up and realize that it is business that makes things happen in this world?
Jeez...maybe I should file patent for "a pseudo-journalist who lives off the competitive producers of society, while earning a meager living attacking free-enterprise capitalism and spreading socialistic propaganda."
Honestly, Jon...did you ever study business in your whole life? Don't you realize that if it wasn't for free-enterprise business and, oh-my-god, corporations, you might not be sitting in front of your computer, shaving with a razor, living in a warm home, and yes, even using open-source software?
Business is the dynamic interaction of numbers and values to create better products in a competitive marketplace at lower and lower costs. Pseudo-journalism is the manipulation of out-of-context facts to dishonestly attack and undermine values to gain unearned power.
Is StarBucks a good thing for competition? Yes, it is. I actually think their Lattes are a little too bitter for my tastes. The question isn't whether their products are good or not. It's that they have the freedom to create these products in a competitive marketplace.
"So, run off back to your Windows box."
Ha! That's really funny:) What's even more funny is that I used to run Linux as a client, and I really enjoyed it. The problem was it didn't have all the tools and applications I need to do my job, so I switched back to Windows.
Sure, I have to reboot 3 times a day, but I least I can run my favorite apps.
The reason the Jon Katz get basjed is because he's an anti-competitive psuedo-journalist who thinks he knows it all.
People like him actually destroy values. It's my job to find these people and weed them out.
Excuse me, but who the hell are YOU?

Jeez, I can't turn to ANY media outlet these days without some anti-capitalist liberal spouting off about how business is bad for America.
Steve Case has broached the limits of a free market economy? Give me an extrra-large break, will you? Steve Case has brought the Internet into the homes of millions of Americans who would have otherwise be essentially shut out. Admittedly, AOL leaves much to be desired, but that's the whole point: We have a choice not to use them.
History is filled with liberal-minded, anti-competitve journalists like you Jon. Remember Ida Tarbell and her absolute ridicule of John Rockefeller? Hmm...something sounds familiar.
"The corporate move to acquire information, online and off, is a civic and an Internet menace." What the hell does this mean, Jon? Is there something wrong with "aquiring" information? Please...
"There hardly exists a free and independent journalistic culture off-line anymore..." Well, then get off your butt and create one. I'm sure Steve Case didn't sit at home complaining about how there was no easy way for Americans to get connected to the Internet. He got off his ass and did it, and now he is being vilified for doing so.
"Wal-Mart, Blockbuster Video, Staples, Toys R Us, Starbucks, Disney and now, AOL/Time-Warner, rule our world." Ironically, you're last statement is the one that strikes the most happiness and hope in my heart. Big business and competitive enterprise are allowed to grow free in our country. This has led to values that were almost unthinkable decades ago. People today live like kings compared to people of the 18th and 19th century. Business super-heros like Sam Walton, Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, Steve Case, Bill Gates, and Michael Milken have created values where non previously existed, have expanded the quality of life and have brought prosperity and happiness to our great country.
Take your anti-competitive psuedo-journalism and stick it, Katz.

Web designers: TAKE NOTE!
My setup:
Fujitsu Lifebook B112 - lightweight, touch screen, small, thin, perfect :)
Nokia 6190 GSM phone (from Omnipoint)
SoftRadius GSM Data Software Suite from Option.com (just a small cable and some software)

What life experiences have led you to this belief? I'm quite curious, because frankly I'm the exact opposite!
