I'm sorry, are you talking about Babylon 5? Tanked? I can't claim to be an expert on the subject, but IIRC B5 was originally designed as a 5 season series, and it lasted for 5 seasons. I think it stands on a different level than ANY of the star trek shows (although the original was on before I really watched sci fi). It was complex, admittedly, but brilliant. It had me on the edge of my seat so many times... It was certainly CLOSER to realistic sci fi than any ST show (life signs? WTF?). It had the effect of a very long, well made miniseries, not just years of discreet episodes.
Don't get me wrong, I've probably seen every ep of all the ST shows now. I enjoy trashy sci-fi, and star trek is the very best of it, but B5 was brilliant, just not made for the masses (which, perhaps, is a somewhat redundant statement; no one gets rich by making brilliant works, from what I've seen).
In short, B5 did what it said, and said what it did. Tanked, it didn't. =)
I agree to a point. The only problem with this line of reasoning is that it suggests a detatchment from the inherent value in techincal pre-requisites. It seems that these are (in the current model, at least) more important where many, if not most developers are concerned.
He got elected running with these sort of views so he has mandate to do what he did.
There is no question (in my mind, at least) that W ran with a campaign strongly influenced by his beliefs, themselves indicitave of a religious nature. I find the original poster entirely within his (logical) rights to point it out, and personally, I find the irony hilarious. Hopefully, enough people will notice, and mod it up, as I think this is a vital piece in understanding the current political climate.
You know, now that class action blood has been spilt, it may be time for people that have been emotionally damaged by the slanderous misuse of the term "hacker" to imply one who cracks systems by the mass media to file.
Additionally, there is an implication in this lawsuit that users of MP3.com were/are "pirates". Perhaps account-holders from MP3.com should get together with the company and countersue for defamation or something.
I'm not saying it doesn't have flaws mind you, but it might at the very least suggest to the judge that BOTH cases be thrown out...
I can't speak for its usability, since I've never really USED it, but craigslist.com ("community" webby winner) Is used by a LOT of people in SF Bay area - its all I hear about from my half-in tech, graphic design, etc. friends. Sort of a... find anything from a date to a car to a lampshade deal. Looks comparably lightweight. No _google_ of course, but then...
Ah, but the trick is, humans trust only THEMSELVES with guns. We don't seem to trust others with
them. God knows, I wouldn't even trust myself. The point is, movies like terminator and robocop
are examples of why people will never generally let something like this happen. Whether it makes
logical sense or not (I'm not taking a position on that, btw), the idea of this will not appeal to the
general public for a long, long time.
And... I believe you're talking about shaft, baby.
Biological self-interest takes a lot of schooling and conditioning by the state to stamp out. The more schooling you've had, the more likely you are to believe that "We" is a larger and larger group. (city, nation, all humans on Earth)
Hwh... what?! By the state? The more schooling? I take exception to that. Granted, I'm just familiar with the US educational system, but how could ANY institution "stamp out" opinion, attitude, or biological imperitave? It may be a school's responsibility to provide contact with various cultures (which most do poorly enough as it is), but even the most industrious, non-dictatory (as far as social judgement) school environment can do only so much before it becomes the responsibility of the student to use his or her intelligence and judgement to over-rule (or not) their "biological imperitaves". I have seen far too many cases where people with more schooling (specifically institutional education) are much smaller-minded than their contemporaries that are self-taught.
I think the term I'm grasping for is "social conscience". In any case, I think it all ends up being as much (if not more) a function of the individual as of the state or institution.
>A great show that tanked

Hmm... and I suppose, much like the driving tests here in the US, they will keep all of the stupid people off the road? :-)
