Alright, yes, unemployment is falling in Europe. It might even get down to, what, 6%? In the US, people are panicking because unemployment just surged up to 4.5%, after years of hovering around 3%. This is exactly what one would expect in a socialist country, because elementary economics shows that high minimum wage forces unemployment.

Of course, Europe is great. Well, from Germany on west it is anyway. It's full of first world countries. But, the USA is still more wealthy, by any measure, including average quality of living.

Finally, yes, I suppose WWI and WWII (or, as a history prof I had liked to call it, "the Second 30 Years' War") did set Europe back, it didn't "help" the US. Economic growth feeds upon itself, and the richer the world is, the faster indiviual countries become richer. So, without the world wars, EVERYONE would be richer and better off. And after almost 60 years, I think we can safely say that the war years have been made up for. It's not like we're blaming the Civil War for any of our problems, and that was less than 90 years ago.

You're right that OSS != Free Software, but BSD is a Free license. Anyone who recieves BSD-licensed code may do whatever they please with it, including relicensing it. The GPL, on the other hand, is a less Free license, because it places restrictions on what people may do with the code.

This is not necessarily bad, because the GPL is fairly Free, and strongly promotes free licensing, which ought to put pressure on the software industry as a whole to become more Free. The BSD license, on the other hand, is completely Free, but does nothing to promote free licensing.

In an ideal world, all code would be BSD licensed, and Dell would give out free (as in beer) computers for everyone! In the real world, I believe that the GPL is useful for fighting back against Microsoft and Apple, who would like nothing better than to keep all software closed. But, do NOT make the mistake of thinking that somehow makes the BSD license unFree.
