Neuromancer predicted this pretty well: Gibson stated that the cutting edge of biotech will happen in places that don't have all the beurocratic hinderances of our society... where ethics (or lack thereof) allow for risky experimentation.
Isn't all of Netscape6's GUI in XML? So if you don't like the fact that say searching for stock quotes takes you to Netscape.com, then change it to take you to Yahoo's quotes or whoever you want... You can do this for all the menu/button/toolbars that bother you.. That's what makes their GUI so cool...
Oh and if someone does do this, make the XML files available for all...
DARE = Drugs Are Really Expensive This has prevented a good number of people from doing drugs (atleast as regularly as they would like)
Seriously though, any program that has a "just say no" attitude will fail... I am really impressed with the programs where they give out free condoms at school or where they let junkies turn in used needles for new ones(to prevent aids).. These programs accept that there is a problem and that people are not going to stop becuase you say "just say no".. so instead they take a more realistic approach and try to minimize the damage done... Since they are more realistic, they don't preach as much and generally get better acceptance by the people they're trying to help...
I remember hearing something about this last year.. The Indian decided that many closed software products included backdoors accessible to US (and possibly other) govt agencies.. THey passed a mandate to use either opensource or in-house developed software for ALL critical applications... This includes OS, security, networking, etc apps but probably not MS Word, etc... I'm sure this decision was based on some investigation/findings that they did...but maybe did not release...
I can understand why the judge wouldn't want the details of a court case discussed in public.. but why would a judge restrict talking about the very existence of the case... I haven't read all the details about this case but did the judge provide any reasoning (even if it's full of BS) as to why he did what he did.... i can understand that the prosecutor would want to keep this case quiet (so that the ACLU, etc don't get involved) but why would the judge do this???

Maybe i'm naieve about the law surrounding inet but how are these lawsuits even plausible....
First, MAPS is a list and simply that... isn't that covered by freedom of speech... and since they have reasonable complaints against Harris, it's isn't libel... right??
Second, i thought that as an ISP, you were only responsible to your clients not to other hosts... if you don't want to let some data over your network, isn't that your perogative??? If the ISP's customers had sued complaining that their emails weren't getting through, then i could understand..but since harris isn't paying AOL (or MSN or whoever) how do they have the right to sue them???
A Direct quote by Adobe's CEO from the yahoo piece:
"Adobe will not be the R&D department for its competitors. Our patent and other aspects of our user interface are key to the user experience and functionality of our products; they are essential to differentiate our products and brand from others."
This seems kinda sad... that for adobe, tabs are a big part of what differentiate their product from competitors... shouldn't the differentiating factors be features, price, quality and not a small part of their UI....
None of us has worked on this project since december 1999.... i have the source on CD somewhere at home and if anybody is interested, i can put it up online.... it'll take me some time to find it though.....
FYI: The application was written for windows using Win32 API (hey, i tried to convince the others to use Linux, but....)
Last year, I group of us at school (U of Michigan) did a project to do generic distributed computing... We didn't do anything with the project after the semester but maybe it could be revived now... It's basically a client-server system to apply distributed computing to different tasks.....
the URL for the project homepage is here
Everybody seems to be interested in making UIs more intuitive and that's all good except that...what's intuitive to me isn't to you... Most people use the computer for a very limited use (web/email/word processing/games). Natural language UI just makes it more complicated for them to remember. This kind of UI might make sense when we have good AI that can not only PARSE the commands but really UNDERSTAND what the person meant... and i don't think we have that yet! For now, create a simple UI and people just need to spend some time to learn it... $.02
As everybody knows, when you try to ban something, people get more interested in it and do it even more... This is especially true for teenagers... While it might have been merely fun to play violent games at arcades before, now it's even more exciting because you're doing something you're not suppossed to.... And this law seems pretty hard to enforce.. I doubt that police officers are going to be actively patrolling arcades.... While this does pose a threat to constitutional rights (in theory) I don't think it will really affect most teenagers who want to play violent games.... $.02 11oh8.
AFAIK, Bills aren't "ruled" unconstitutional, Laws are... so once the bill becomes a law, it can be revoked by the courts.. by then, it has nothing to do with any unrelated riders in it's bill.... riders are a good way for politicians to include their pet projects (building roads in their home town, etc) into an important bill that will surely pass... $.02.
I haven't personally used mod_perl (sticking to PHP) but i've heard good stuff about it.. It's an Apache module that lets you embed perl code in your file... Similar concept to other pre-processors except it uses the full power of perl...
The protestors had many causes, whether related or not, but that's not the main point. The thing that interests me is that the protests occurred. My Generation (X, Y, whatever) has offten been criticized for not caring about anything, for not taking a stand. We've been told that we're living in affluent times (economy up, no war, etc) and that we are selfish, unmoved, etc.... I think that Seattle goes a long way in showing that we DO care and that we are ready to fight for our causes (whatever they may be) It was actually refreshing to see that theere were so many causes; people with different ideologies and from different social, economic and political groups were protestng together against what they believe is a threat to their freedom.. isn't that democracy is all about???
This was only a product review... Stock discussion boards get even worse... company executives anonymously posting to raise their stock or lower a competitor's.... I guess if your product isn't too good and you still have to face the stockholders, some poeple will try just about anything...
I played around with the data and came up with a couple of visualizations:

the map is not the territory.
