That analogy doesn't really fit this situation
more suitable would be maybe, if you bought a honda, and then decided to run it on jet fuel instead of gasoline, the engine doesn't break, but it refuses to run, HOWEVER the engine still runs after draining out all the jet fuel and replacing it with gasoline
this is kind of like how users hacked the iphone in ways UNINTENDED and against the terms of the warranty, however they feel that their iphone is "bricked" by having it restored to a brand-new-from-the-factory state? (not including the data which is still there)
Apple released a product, making it painfully clear it was to remain on the AT&T network, if you don't like at&t, you aren't forced to buy the product
if you choose to "hack" it, and make it work on other networks, props to you, but you really can't expect apple to continue to support it...
new updates ARE NOT mandatory, only if you choose in itunes. i have an iphone (its not hacked) but if i were to hack it, i would do so with full understanding that apple would not support it
