    Uhm, the sweetness of *nix is you can statically link the KDE libs or GNOME libs and it can work on the same OS and different environments without the libraries. I had to choose between KDE and GTK and I chose KDE, because I like the Documentation for QT. I think if you actually researched the issue you would have found this out.

    The issue of linux fragmentation comes in when linux coders use linux ONLY things like /proc or try to access hardware directly like the use of /dev/dsp. In a way this is laziness, coders need to learn to use libraries that work for *nix in general. The more general you get while programming the more scalable and stable programs get.

    Any compiling problems can be solved when you learn how the compiler works, and how to read compile errors. Otherwise use rpms and avoid the source.

    To make a long rant short try to avoid making linux programs and make *nix programs.

    A solution you can use is have one really strange password "ql69$!amzsefb" (not mine of course) and memorize this. When you need to create a new password create a variant => ql69$!anzsefb and ql69$!aozsefb this way you will never forget your password.

    The encrypted passwords:
    ql69$!amzsefb -> OBLzco1HA9QN2
    ql69$!anzsefb -> .5/ZI.2Wlfn0w

    To me that gives good variance so it would be tough for password crackers.

    If you have no choice about some passwords you should use a VERY secure password database. I don't personally use password databases but its better have a backup, then to be locked out of your accounts.

    I think the cause of many world problems is confusion so let me help you guys out with this problem.

    IMHO crashing applications are not usually the OS's fault, it is usually the application programmer's fault. This goes for NT, Linux,etc.
    When we talk about OS stability NT does not cut it. I've seen NT force a reboot on computers many times than I could count.

    Now this A.C. may have a hellova good configuration, NT compliant hardware, or the luck of the Irish because a one year uptime is rare when using NT as desktop in my experience.

    Linux, is more stable because anyone who is having a problem could simply debug it and fix the error (if knowlegeable enough). Or the person can complain and have other programmers or "kernel hackers" help. In NT you cannot do that leaving you with the buggy software you paid hundreds of dollars for. Sure you can complain to Microsoft techsupport but good luck.

    This idea also carries down to Linux applications. Now being a Linux user I have found Corel Word Perfect crashes out of the blue, and since they don't release the source I cannot even begin to fix it. Thus I do not use Corel Word Perfect. Abiword, KOffice, and Gnumeric I hear is alpha software and I've never used it so I will not comment, except to say since the source code is out it will most likely be improved.

    To make a long story short application stablity is fine since ~99% of the non-alpha software works period. And I much prefer being on a OS where I have the power of choice rather than being manipulated into upgrading products based on market trends not unique ideas (i.e. Win98's intergration into the internet. I want folders not web pages damn it).

    Personally I do not agree that Linux should be called GNU/Linux. The kernel was a project started by Linus and since its the heart of the OS it should be called Linux. Windows 98 was not called explorer not was OS/2 called presentation manager.

    What people do not understand about free software is software itself is NOT FREE OF CHARGE the source code is reusable and distributable. Unix in general was founded on this modular paradigm. Yes MONEY has nothing to do with free software. The reason for this misconception is because not many people have read the GNU license. How can someone logically disagree with something he/she has never read. The idea that companies (especially hardware manufacturers) are afraid the freesoftware model will allow opposing companies will steal their technology is disturbing. The sad thing is companies have been doing it for years via reverse engieering. If computers can run the software it can be reversed engineered. Another problem companies have with free software is that it promotes piracy. When you release the software via the GNU license you do not have to release the corresponding resources like sounds,graphics, or data files. Just the source code. Piracy will happen no matter what model you use.
    An example of the problem with non-free software:
    -You have a brand new printer.
    -The printer requires a driver so software communicates with printer.
    Problem one:
    - If the driver has bugs, you must wait for bug fix. (Problem whether free or non-free)
    - If the comany goes under, while bug fix is being developed you have a problem.
    Problem two:
    - Say your printer is old and the OS company changes the architecture, your printer most likely will not be supported for the new OS.

    The bottom line is the current model of commercial software hurts companies as well as end users because people lack the freedom they need to modify the product they spent money for.
