Uhm, the sweetness of *nix is you can statically link the KDE libs or GNOME libs and it can work on the same OS and different environments without the libraries. I had to choose between KDE and GTK and I chose KDE, because I like the Documentation for QT. I think if you actually researched the issue you would have found this out.
The issue of linux fragmentation comes in when linux coders use linux ONLY things like/proc or try to access hardware directly like the use of/dev/dsp. In a way this is laziness, coders need to learn to use libraries that work for *nix in general. The more general you get while programming the more scalable and stable programs get.
Any compiling problems can be solved when you learn how the compiler works, and how to read compile errors. Otherwise use rpms and avoid the source.
To make a long rant short try to avoid making linux programs and make *nix programs. --------------------------- ^_^ smile death approaches.
A solution you can use is have one really strange password "ql69$!amzsefb" (not mine of course) and memorize this. When you need to create a new password create a variant => ql69$!anzsefb and ql69$!aozsefb this way you will never forget your password.
The encrypted passwords: ql69$!amzsefb -> OBLzco1HA9QN2 ql69$!anzsefb ->.5/ZI.2Wlfn0w
To me that gives good variance so it would be tough for password crackers.
If you have no choice about some passwords you should use a VERY secure password database. I don't personally use password databases but its better have a backup, then to be locked out of your accounts. --------------------------- ^_^ smile death approaches.
Personally all the hardware on my computer is supported well (except for an old scanner I had). Unless there is a speed improvement or memory management change I will stick with 2.2.10!

Linux is an OS for people who want an open source platform that is fully customizeable. Microsoft, on the other hand, supports a crowd that cares more about ease of use than the internals of the OS. I want complete control over what I install and how my system is organized. I've paid 2K for my system I deserve that much.
I have no problem with novices using Linux, I think it is a great learning experience. As long as those novices become experts sooner or later.
Linux IMHO is an expert system and should be treated as such.

There are problems that bother me though: Companies like corel don't give out there stuff open source. Code Warrior is for RedHat only. The more the linux community accepts this the more hypocritical we look. I am proud to say that I have 100% open source code on my system. I do believe it is great that 95% more or less of linux's stuff is open, but if companies like corel, oracle, etc. are not planning to play by the rules the linux community is in danger! We can only win if open source becomes cool. If major companies trample all over us in the name of progress, the linux community will look like hypocrits.

Right on, the MWAVE was the worst modem I have ever seen in my life. Modem and Sound card integrated into one pile of horse.... When you want to play sound you have to reduce the modems throughput to 14.4. Not only that a week after I purchased one my computer would freeze for no apparent reason. Once I removed my MWAVE the problem was solved. I did not even want to trade in my MWAVE for a new one. I bought a sound blaster and modem blaster and never looked back.

You have a good point, black and hispanic cultures may not be as accepting of technology as other cultures may be. Many African Americans try to fill in cultural holes by accepting a mixed bag of ancient African cultures and interpolating it into a general culture but that can hinder acceptance of future ideas. This could hurt the acceptance of technology amongst African American cultures. Many Asians have an idea of there cultural identity so accepting future ideas may not be as much of a problem.
Sadly in today's political climate I don't think your point will be accepted. :
All of us who are responding on this forum are part of a net elite. We are smart or lucky enough to be on the internet and knowlegeable enough to be using slashdot as a resource. What about the kids (black/white/asian/indian/hispanic/etc.) that are not lucky enough to be on the net. They can not be here to respond to our critisims and boasts to give us the REAL side of the story. Whether you like it or not we know something they do not and we have access they do not. That really hurts the credibility of this forum. 33% of white americans relative to 19% or so of black americans may be on the net but those numbers are PATHETIC no matter which category you may be in. This does not even include a world wide study. The numbers are even more disgusting. We may complain that more asians are on the net but they too are an elite few in comparison to those who live in China, India, and other third world areas. Many people complain that affirmative action is unfair and wish they recieve scholarship like all blacks and hispanics do. For those people I want you to check your school's statistics for how many blacks and hispanics you have in your school. You will be lucky to see 18% of each. We should count our blessings and think about how lucky we are to be in front of a computer today. We should also encourage people of all races to make sacrifices to get on the net and gain computer skills. But sadly we are here complaining about race A having more privileges than race B.

Dude, no one reads the license agreement anyway, and I've never heard about anyone suing Microsoft for crashes so I must agree with your comment.
Buggy software is now expected from many companies, this is because they have been trained to believe Microsoft is the best software company that ever existed and if they can't do it no one can. I once read a time magazine article stating "Microsoft is the best software company, if you need reliability Microsoft is the place to go." And then I noticed that the man who was speaking was a financial expert. The obvious problem with this is how does this financial expert have the right to judge what software company is the best or not. He probably cannot tell the difference between assembly programming and assembly lines.
The problem is these people's opinions often matter more then that of technology experts. And thats who managers and bureaucrats listen to.

When the Gnome people create a complete desktop with simple configuration, and libraries that do not break my current system, I might consider going over.
I think the cause of many world problems is confusion so let me help you guys out with this problem.
IMHO crashing applications are not usually the OS's fault, it is usually the application programmer's fault. This goes for NT, Linux, etc. When we talk about OS stability NT does not cut it. I've seen NT force a reboot on computers many times than I could count.
Now this A.C. may have a hellova good configuration, NT compliant hardware, or the luck of the Irish because a one year uptime is rare when using NT as desktop in my experience.
Linux, is more stable because anyone who is having a problem could simply debug it and fix the error (if knowlegeable enough). Or the person can complain and have other programmers or "kernel hackers" help. In NT you cannot do that leaving you with the buggy software you paid hundreds of dollars for. Sure you can complain to Microsoft techsupport but good luck.
This idea also carries down to Linux applications. Now being a Linux user I have found Corel Word Perfect crashes out of the blue, and since they don't release the source I cannot even begin to fix it. Thus I do not use Corel Word Perfect. Abiword, KOffice, and Gnumeric I hear is alpha software and I've never used it so I will not comment, except to say since the source code is out it will most likely be improved.
To make a long story short application stablity is fine since ~99% of the non-alpha software works period. And I much prefer being on a OS where I have the power of choice rather than being manipulated into upgrading products based on market trends not unique ideas (i.e. Win98's intergration into the internet. I want folders not web pages damn it).

Every OS has problems and limitations. Linux is not an exception to this rule. Although the information is a bit vague, developers should either buy the full report or use what information they have to improve the OS. Linux is a great OS and there is no reason for this report to be avoided because of pride.
As I read the posts to the RMS interview is see people complaining about how RMS is a fool and the misconseptions of freesoftware. Personally I do not agree that Linux should be called GNU/Linux. The kernel was a project started by Linus and since its the heart of the OS it should be called Linux. Windows 98 was not called explorer not was OS/2 called presentation manager.
What people do not understand about free software is software itself is NOT FREE OF CHARGE the source code is reusable and distributable. Unix in general was founded on this modular paradigm. Yes MONEY has nothing to do with free software. The reason for this misconception is because not many people have read the GNU license. How can someone logically disagree with something he/she has never read. The idea that companies (especially hardware manufacturers) are afraid the freesoftware model will allow opposing companies will steal their technology is disturbing. The sad thing is companies have been doing it for years via reverse engieering. If computers can run the software it can be reversed engineered. Another problem companies have with free software is that it promotes piracy. When you release the software via the GNU license you do not have to release the corresponding resources like sounds, graphics, or data files. Just the source code. Piracy will happen no matter what model you use. An example of the problem with non-free software: -You have a brand new printer. -The printer requires a driver so software communicates with printer. Problem one: - If the driver has bugs, you must wait for bug fix. (Problem whether free or non-free) - If the comany goes under, while bug fix is being developed you have a problem. Problem two: - Say your printer is old and the OS company changes the architecture, your printer most likely will not be supported for the new OS.
The bottom line is the current model of commercial software hurts companies as well as end users because people lack the freedom they need to modify the product they spent money for.
