  1. I work at an ISP and we've been dealing with this for 4-6 weeks now. Of course customers tend to blame us why their Windows 10 computer won't connect to the internet, so we have to at least figure out a solution to keep them happy. A quick google brings up a solution where you clear a few caches to fix it. We've walked quite a few computer un-savvy people through the process, so it's not too difficult --just annoying.

That wasn't a review in some non-biased comparison between multiple hosts. It's my biased opinion.

I'm not a professional critic trying to be as non-biased as possible. I rather like Webfaction and think it's worth a shot. If you shared something really cool that I ended up purchasing, I wouldn't hesitate to give you credit. That's what the whole referral business is for.

A snake-oil thing to do would be if I tried to trick people into clicking the link. Instead, I offered the referral option AFTER posting a direct link to their site.

"I mean, if you don't sell me on their service, I'm not going to give you your referral bonus." Exactly, hence my disclaimer "If you DO decide to join, don't be afraid to use me as your referrer." Besides, I believe the bonus is only for those who register an account. Clicking does nothing for me.

    Anyway, thanks for your honesty!

I have been VERY pleased with Webfaction. They are basically a bunch of geeks that make web hosting a pleasure for other geeks. Their servers have all the latest tools, dev packages, and they have an automated application install for over 20 different applications (PHP, Ruby, Python, etc etc). Their support system is fast and competent, and I've learned a ton on their community forums.

If they don't have a particular app that you want, it's not that difficult to download and install it yourself.

  4. Re:Washington "State" on DirecTV Sued By Washington State · · Score: 5, Funny

Having lived in Washington ("State") for most of my life, it's practically necessary when traveling in foreign places. Every single time I didn't specify the "state" at the end, people would say "Oh! Washington. Where the white house is, right?" It's very annoying indeed to have to specify which Washington. It's even more annoying if you live in Vancouver, WA.

    "I'm from Vancouver Washington."
    "Oh, Canada? Cool."
"No, it's in the state Washington; just 6-7 hours south of Canada's Vancouver."
"Oh, where the White house is, fun!"
    "Nevermind."

  5. How about Sendside Networks? on Online Storage For Lawyers? · · Score: 1

Ok, so here's a shameless plug for where I used to work, but hear me out.

Sendside is a fairly new company that specializes in secure messaging and storage, among other things. They conform to various legal security requirements for banks and hospitals, and even allow digital signing of contracts and other forms. In all, I think their ideas are pretty revolutionizing for what could be considered "email", but it is much more than that.

Their services for legal solutions can be seen here.

Here is their white paper on their security practices.

  6. Creeping Death! All the way! on MUDs Turn 30 Years Old · · Score: 2, Interesting

Creeping Death was a very fast paced MUD. I remember getting up at 4am to play, just so I could avoid the higher-level player killers. Not even the 'safe room' was safe (through a means of dragging someone out of the room once they're asleep). Aarilax was his name. Finally one of my friends beat him at his own game. That was like a gazelle ramming its hoof down a lion's throat while simultaneously kicking him in the groin. *Ahhh* Those were the days...

But, more on topic: Thanks to playing MUDS, my typing skills were greatly improved while I was just a kid. I remember beating the entire typing program our school had when I was in the 5th grade, in only 1 month. The rest of the year I was allowed to surf the "internet" (a novel concept at the time) and animate stuff.

Now I'm an independent contractor and am earning my keep while paying for my wife and I to go through school. Proves to show that, at least in my case, games helped pave the way to education and employment.
