  1. Re:Why? on Ask Jeremy White and Alexandre Julliard About the Future of WINE · · Score: 2, Insightful

Err I am going to go with gaming here.

VM's work great if its something that does not need graphics or direct X processing, but if you want that you are out of luck.

  2. Not a good idea on IT Students Contract Out Coursework To India · · Score: 2, Informative

Anyone in the IT field that has dealt with outsourced code knows that it's generally buggy and poorly written and requires a lot of debug time on the company side. It's not likely that annoying college students are going to get good quality especially since they likely won't know the difference if they are using a service like that anyway.

I guess outsourcing would generally work for simple assignments, but frankly it would take more time to find someone to do it then it would to do most coding assignments in the first place. Add to that the fact that you will have tests on the subject both in class and in interviews so doing this is not a good move long term anyway.

Now if it was English papers...

  3. Face Value on Japan Imposes "Fine On Fat" · · Score: 4, Insightful

I don't think this has anything to do with people being overweight at its core. This is more likely an anti western culture move to try to stop Japan from becoming more like America. There have been similar proposals made to try to make western style toilets more expensive so they will not be commonly used. Older Japanese are generally worried that Japan is losing its culture and that tends to lead to strange laws made in an attempt to stop the so called slide. The law itself is rather stupid idea though and I don't think it's likely to be in place 5 years down the road unless the penalty is a lot lighter than it sounds at face value.

  4. Unlikely on Motley Fool Says RIAA Hitting a Brick Wall · · Score: 4, Insightful

The legal team they have may be moving away and pretty much trying to give up the strategy, but there is no way the record company business management is going to drop it. They have too much of a since of entitlement over making unlimited amounts of money off the same music forever.

It's much more likely you will see the experienced members of the legal team quietly move out to other jobs and new inexperienced members will come in and do the same failed strategy as before.

If it was going to end, we would have seen some level of common since out of the RIAA by now either dropping music prices drastically and providing consistent DRM free music. Drastic price reduction is the only way they are going to cut piracy and that is something they will never do. They are spoiled with years of charging insane amounts of money for something that typically costs them nothing or next to nothing. They are not going to change there thinking until they lose most of the new music being recorded to other venues.

  5. Ohh wow on US Register of Copyrights Says DMCA Is 'Working Fine' · · Score: 2, Insightful

This is surprising how? The government lives to increase its power wealth and reach. DMCA was great as far as the copyright office is concerned. If anything they want more of it and a couple new government agencies to enforce it The only way the DMCA is going away is the supreme court or congress (super unlikely).

  6. Re:How do these people get jobs? on Music Industry Set To Introduce the "Ringle" · · Score: 1

Yea but fries sell as people want there salty goodness. This is a derived product concept that offers nothing new for the same to more cost depending on how to value the songs involved.

  7. How do these people get jobs? on Music Industry Set To Introduce the "Ringle" · · Score: 3, Insightful

This pretty much is the usual from the music industry. Badly thought out plan that has no chance at all of succeeding spearheaded by some management guy that lives in a fantasy world of catch phases. I will bet that this will be dead before first quarter 2008.

  8. Re:Well that's the end of Vista in a business sett on Vista Pirates To Get "Black Screen of Darkness" · · Score: 1

Users generally have to Remote desktop / Management console to a server from there desktop. If a DBA gets locked out of there own desktop then the result is the same as if the server was locked out. If you cant get to it then you cant get to it. In addition, SQL server runs just fine on Vista and a lot of smaller companies just don't know any better. It may not be an official server OS, but I am sure it was getting used as such in more then a few cases.

  9. Well that's the end of Vista in a business setting on Vista Pirates To Get "Black Screen of Darkness" · · Score: 4, Insightful

I wonder how long until some company loses a production SQL server costing millions of dollars because of this when they owned a group license. Its more then enough to stop any company from using vista if they where considering it.

  10. DNA is not the way to go on Judge Says, Record DNA of Everyone In the UK · · Score: 1

DNA is only useful now because its not in wide use. Sure DNA like a finger print is a good identifier and because of that it's easy to jump to the incorrect conclusion that this is a good move for clearing the innocent.

A fingerprint is a good identifier not only because its one of a kind, but because its dam hard to fake. The most you can do is spend a lot of time with a mold or use chemicals to lift and drop one.

DNA is a horrible identifier because its so butt easy to get DNA from anyone. A week in a hair cut place and I have all the evidence I need to point any crime I do at anyone else. Skin, saliva, blood, esc are all very easy to get from anyone you want to frame for a crime any time you feel like it and it takes no skill, knowledge or time to do. The only reason you don't see more of this right now is only because so few people have there DNA of file.
