    Those people 50 years ago were pussies. 300 years ago there was barely any medical care, the water wasn't exactly clean - heck, indoor plumbing was for rich people - and the fastest form of communication was a dude on a horse carrying a letter. But people lived. Well, a lot of them did.

    That's why I not only set my phone to silent in a theater, I set the brightness to minimum, so that if I do want to look at the screen it won't light the whole place up.

    Perhaps cell providers should have their towers log and report any sudden signal losses. This could help find where jammers were used and lead to the apprehension of the asshats using them.

    I still haven't figured out a way to stop those engines, but I'm working on it...

    Sodium silicate in the engine oil before you leave. The access panel's at the back and usually just has a couple of unsecured latches.

    In any case, it stinks and irritates the lungs. If someone was setting off stinkbombs because they enjoyed it I don't think bystanders would find it acceptable.

    There may be other urgent calls a person would like to be able to receive. Business calls, family emergency, but who knows now right? Because this selfish asshole has decided that nobody on the bus should be able to make any calls because he can't deal with the reality of living around other people in the 21st century.

    I hope all these morons get caught and have the book thrown at them.

    Not tinfoil, see the RC plane bomber. Also many houses have been raided because a pedo used that house's open AP. In one case the pedo used a cantenna while on a boat.

    Also the guys in LulzSec love to frame people they don't like to get them "v&." See the British guy who was arrested on suspicion of being LulzSec member Topiary while the real Topiary was in Sweden.

    Wow you've set up a lot of strawmen. Neither me nor jagapen said that corporations should have no rights or that corporate personhood should be abolished (that's another discussion). However if corporations have less or even no right to free speech it would not affect the right of free speech of any person in any way.

  14. I breathe in a shit-ton of diesel exhaust in my commute, and in offroad rallies (along with lots of fine dirt...I hope the mud that comes out of my nose the next day contains most of it).

  15. The dark black stuff is more unburned diesel than diesel exhaust. You don't see that stuff from a properly set up diesel engine (look at the exhaust from a modern diesel ship like a cruise liner - it looks like less than what comes out of those old trucks). On some modern diesels you can't see anything coming out of the exhaust at all, just like a gasoline car.

    I think it's just for the liberal-leaning readership to rage against (the editors either intentionally troll us from time to time, or don't notice the trolling). Slashdot's readership has always been mainly liberals and libertarians, liberals being more common.

    He judged it correctly based on technical merit. Unfortunately technical merit has nothing to do with trendiness. Might as well cut a chicken's head off and set it loose over a giant ouija board of current tech products if you want to predict tech trends.*

    *Nah I'm kidding. It's all about the path of least resistance and who got there first, but it's completely alien from geek logic.

    Cat colours are due to variations in the womb, not genetic.

    No freaking way. I have a cat that has the exact same patterns as her father, down to the same brown spot on the right side of the nose. If it were down to womb conditions and not genes the chance of that happening would be infintescimally small. I can upload pics if you don't believe me.

    When was the last time you saw a red-haired guy as the HERO in a movie or TV show?

    At least one of the Hardy Boys had red hair IIRC (not a TV show or movie, but bonus points for being old), Philip J. Fry, Ichigo Kurosaki, Rorschach was mostly a good guy (he had red hair in the movie at least, dunno about the original comic)....that's just off the top of my head.

    All Chinese people aren't idiotic (that's racist. You're racist.) but traditional Chinese medicine sure as hell is. It drives A LOT of the trade for products from the carcasses of endangered species. Tiger penis, rhino horn, and elephant tusk, off the top of my head, are some things that morons take when they should be taking Viagra.
