Yep this is a point on which it is fair to say that America is no better.

The only safe way to take devices there is to wipe your devices clean (an uncertain and damaging act on flash storage) and carry a hard drive with a deniable hidden encrypted partition (including duress key to unlock a decoy partition) containing backups of the devices. Or store the backup online (connecting with an anti-MITM system and using proper encryption of course, that means ONLY YOU have the key and there is no "recovery" option) if you have a shit-ton of bandwidth and time.

Even then they may take your hardware and do who-knows-what to it, as happened to Moxie Marlinspike's phone. Or you may just not get it back at all.

Well it could be natural gas, which is far cleaner-burning but has its own problems in extraction, but it will probably be coal because it's super-duper-cheap, easily available, and oddly enough the NIMBYs prefer to be showered with tiny particles of radioactive material than to have big blocks of it safely contained.

  15. Re:Such systems have been proposed before on The Zuckerberg Tax · · Score: 1

Oh jeez do I have to spell this out for you? If you make $20k a year and have to spend $10k of it on essential stuff like food, say there's a flat 20% sales tax, you'll be paying $2k in sales taxes, or 10% of your annual income, on top of having to spend about half of it on basic first-world survival stuff.

Zuckerberg needs the same basic stuff to survive (let's assume slaughtering a wild chicken costs roughly the same as buying one from Wal-Mart once it hits the table, and let's assume that being chauffeured around in a Maybach burns the same energy as huffing it everywhere) but makes about a jillion dollars a year and his sales tax could be as little as 0.000001% of his annual income. How is that not regressive?

I wouldn't want littering to be legalized, if anything most countries are too lenient on it, but in Singapore you can easily rack up 4-digit fines for accidentally dropping a gum wrapper. I also won't call a country a shithole for not having full Portugal-style drug legalization, but the death penalty for trafficking is completely insane.

Singapore doesn't offer full religious freedom:

Most countries do, so that's a big negative point.
