One Linux box vs an entire network of Windows boxen would a killer pay-per-view. Put my money on the Linux box anyday.

A lot of people do not want to see any graphics on the web, muchless have everything represented as an image. Sure, I can show you a picture of a box faster than I can describe one, but the web can not do that yet on any type of large scale.Maybe when we all have broadband, maybe never. I vote for never.

Other than gaming on linux, where do we feel the effect of this? What happens if 3D development slows to a crawl in linux? Serious question, I live in an xterm most of the time so I am interested in learning the broader effects of this, not just from a gaming standpoint.

  4. Want to see a distro survive? on The Upcoming Corel-Based Distro From Xandros · · Score: 0

Then buy the damn thing! College students and the un-under employed excluded here, but anyone out there working in IT land can certainly afford to spend a few dollars on their fave distro. I know some of us have the bandwidth to download all day and burn our own, but just how in the hell do you expect these companies to stay in business if everyone does that? Selling services? Give me a break, newbies do not use their "services", most of you don't need them, and most companies either do not need them or the distro makers are incapable of supporting them. Let's see, how many companies do you think Slackware can offer 24/7 support too? Just buy a release every once in a while, it will not kill you and it may help a company you love stay around for a while. Just do it now! I don't even care if you open the damn box, better yet donate the software to someone else. Maybe even a newbie. But whatever you do, do not under any circumstances bitch and moan when your distro is no more and you have never supported them.

I have good friends in and around the Pentagon and a good part of today was spent in fear for their lives. While watching the disaster unfold in NYC I thought of my friends in DC almost immediatly. The first message I sent (via ymessenger) was "Get the hell out of DC" which went unanswered. My friends did get out of DC, the story of my best friends "escape" is actually interesting but I do not have the ability to tell it right now. My story is nothing compared to others so I will stop this now. Forgive me for this mess of a post, I thought I could do this but right now I cannot. Just very sorry for the people who lost friends and family today. One thing is certain, this country will never be the same. Best wishes to those who are going through hell right now.

Wow, the memories just keep flooding back! I remember the day I recieved my server from VALinux like it was yesterday. They had recently decided to exit the hardware business and were offering great deals on cute little 1U servers that I just could not pass up. Some of you youngsters will laugh now, but I was amazed upon reciept of my new box! This thing had 2 750Mhz processors, 512MB RAM, 72 GBs of screaming 10KRPM SCSI drives, and three NICs as well! All this in 1U (I know, this is huge by todays standards but back in the day...)of space! That thing booted up VA's version of RH 6.2 like nothing I have ever seen! It was hard to run more than few dozen progs at once with only 512MB (again, those are MegaBytes, not Terabytes!) but I was amazed at the performance back then. I still have it too, maybe I will fire it up one day for a trip down memory lane.

Actually, so long as IIS is separated from NT, we're probably safe. Right now, IIS is `free' (i.e. bundled) with NT. This means any company with NT servers automatically has an NT+IIS WWW server on their hands - so why would they want to use another WWW server like Apache? They've already got one!"
Because some of us do not like IIS! My Windows 2000 intranet server runs Xitami exclusively. I have tried IIS and it generated too many errors, plus it bitched about PHP extensions. I have also tried Apache, and was not impressed on the 2000 platform. So Xitami it is! Disclaimer: I am sure that some IIS guru could make PHP work well enough, just as I am sure that Apache can be made to perform wonderfully on a Windows 2000 platform. The thing is, Xitami works great with minimal effort on my part, and I can show the other people in the office how to work with the configuration easily enough.
The reason I do not run Linux + Apache (or Roxen) on this server is because no one else in my shop is comfortable with these technologies. I am working on that though!

Another thing: no single country was capable of winning WW1 or WW2.
