There was a really good (imho) fantasy book by terry goodkind, published by tor, called wizard's first rule, which covered this fairly well.
the titchler phrase described the wizard's first rule as something similar to (i can't remember exactly) "people are stupid. they will believe anything they are told, so long as they have a reason to believe it, or even simply no reason not to believe it, or even if they are afraid it might be true" or something along those lines
i'm sure someone else out there has read these, so if you have the time (i have to leave for work here in a sec), someone might want to look it up and post the actual phrase.... ta ta
and a really cool thing about that, is that 20jan is also my (along w/ 1/365th (or about) of the world's population) birthday, too.... just kinda cool</semi-shameless plug>
sorry for wasting the bandwidth on a semi-shameless plug

the funny thing about that snake law..... i'm from klamath falls
it stems from when kfalls had wooden sidewalks, and the snakes would occaisionally come out while you were walking by, and scare the shit out of you. people would then knock off their heads, and the bodies would fall back under the sidewalk and rot, smelling really bad and generally being a Bad Thing(tm)
the only problem with that, is that i have mine set to "oldest first", for chronological coherance (although i'm assuming "high score first" sorts an entire thread, rather than subcomments within a thread that might have higher scores than the original comment)
um.... where's the "bad news" in the "signifcantly improve performance and stability" and "increasing Unix's viability as a gaming platform" if you're a linux gamer? i'm not a gamer myself, so it doesn't bother me much, that it'll just be faster and more stable but i don't know any gamers who oppose that, either
forgive me for being naive, but wasn't that katz post listed higher than this one, just a scant few minutes ago? i don't now how slashdot does that, but i think they've managed to get into one of those 'reverse time' regions of the universe for a small bit also, please forgive the ee cummings sort of style... you see, i can be lazy sometimes, too
either way, i hope to find someplace with clear skys, because it'll either be full or nearly full, and pretty cool
the last one i saw was a few years ago, and just really cool
<shameless-plug>also on my birthday</shameless-plug>

oh ... that makes a lot more sense ... oops ... and its usually when most applicable to notice it
i sometimes overlook the obvious
