Its not really a "dusty old lumox" so to speak. It doesn't have as much hardware support, true, but its getting better with every passing release. OpenBSD seems extremely secure and clean and great for programmers wanting to get something done (I see it as the Debian of BSD, or vice-versa). FreeBSD (Maybe comparable to RedHat or SuSE) is more popular, easier to install, etc etc etc. NetBSD... well, I don't know about NetBSD so I won't touch there. I've installed it on my system once (though, for lack of room on my permanent HD I had to use that HD for an mp3 storage area) and it seemed OK. Don't knock it. If you do you're missing a great opportunity (and maybe getting an opportunity to be flamed by Tom Christianson;P sorry Tom couldn't help myself)

I completely agree. If all you needed to do when you first booted Linux was to type in a couple characters into a GUI and have it ready for network / internet use people would use it a lot. Maybe the iMaccers would be placated if there was an "internet box" for Linux (please don't hurt me for saying that). In fact, if everything you can do on Windows can be done on Linux (and so far the vast majority of it can - - tho we need wore games and better DVD support) and maybe a brainless way to recompile the kernel (something like Window's 'critical update" that just patches the kernel without editing much, or, gives you the choice to edit it in a friendly GUI environment) this would be a plauible idea. Until then, however, we must remember that just because some things are easy for us it is not easy for the run of the mill brainless user. Also sysadmins at my school like the "easy" way to take care of Win (not really easy OR secure but the pretty colors make it seem so). Basically I think that when Gnome gets to be maybe 3.0 or so mainstream people will break away from Windows. In this whole speech, we have forgotten the BSDs. Other fine OSes, which, with a little help in the hardware and GUI department, could go maintstream. Yeah, I've forgotten many other OSes but touched on the main ones so that's all that matters. Hell, maybe someone should make a Be or Mac - like desktop (not just theme), everyone (or most everyone) would be happy. Then again I could be talking out of my ass and be moderated down big time;)

I think that this was the best Perl book I have ever read (Programming Perl and all the other ORA Perl books coming in close, but then again I've only read Perl books by ORA so Ihave to broaden my horizons), but it is a first printing of it. It has a lot of major errors. I highly reccomend that you visit the author's errata page before reading it and fix at least all of the major errors (there are a few). The author's errata page is more complete and will be updated as errors are found more than I would expect the ORA site is, so I reccomend that you use his site instead of ORA's site for errata concerning this book. Don't make the list of errata scare you though it is a great read and I myself am halfway through reading it in full for the third time.
If you think you know what the hell is going on you're probably full of shit.
Isn't the point of having many flavors of Linux that you can base it on personal preference? It's the first thing that happens when a newbie goes on IRC for Linux: newbie: What's the best version of Linux? alinuxuser: It's personal preference. so doesn't rating them basically defeat the purpose? It's like trying to rate vi, emacs, and Corel word, depends what you like.

I think that there should be a more definitive law on this subject. Personally I believe that ISPs should only allow one account per customers so this sort of thing couldn't happen. Why would you need more than one account? I think ISPs should be held responsible if someone pretends to be someone else through their service, especially if threats of this nature are made. But, I think that information passing through the ISP should not be held responsible by the ISP. Imposters are one thing as you can find out if you have one person on more than one account with a simple Perl script, but if a child pornographer used Prodigy there is no way they could know unless they stumbled upon one of his sites (what would they be doing there anyways) or constantly monitored items in his account (I see this as a breach of privacy). Well, I don't know how to end this without lines upon lines of nothing so I think I'll end rather abr...
If you think you know what the hell is going on you're probably full of shit.
My friends are in a band and got an mp3.com account. It really helped them out and they got a lot of downloads. They aren't on mp3.com anymore... I believe its listeningroom.lycos.com or some such... It got them notice. But, it didn't get them money. They are still in the same situation as when they started. Not one person has contacted us with a request for a CD as all their music is up there in mp3 format. If you are interested check out i.am.seemless (note how the site automatically sucks because of the URL, I can admit that because I made it... note the hit counter stuck on "1":P) Anyhow, I kinda got off topic there for a minute: these places are great for getting free music but I agree, it does sort of fuck the artist.

Well, I dunno. I'm not entirely sure of what HURD exactly is, just that its another OS based on GNU, but it sounds kinda sifty. If you don't feel like running it full time yet, well, maybe the FreeMWare came just in time. Oh, if anyone knows a site / feels like explaining what HURD is that'd rule.

For criminals I believe they do look at the contents of the computer... Remember the uni-bomber? Well, not a computer but a typwriter. They were able to find out he wrote the letters that way. Didn't they go in the shooter's computers after the incident-of-shooting-in-colorado (avoiding any hot words that may be moderated down by the script:P)? See, I think that for criminals, yeah, great idea. But they're treating everyone as a criminal, guilty until proven innocent and screw it you're STILL guilty, and that is bad.
If you think you know what the hell is going on you're probably full of shit.
Well, I don't care HOW unlikely it is. I think that it is a major breach of privacy and should not be done. Or allowed. Unfortunatly the system of checks and balances (dunno about Aussi law, they may not HAVE one) seems to be out of whack. I am so glad I don't live there right now, but feel very bad for those who do. There is a way around this of course: close off all your incoming ports. That way they can't FTP, HTTP, SSH, TELNET, whatever to your computer. The only port on my computer that is open I think is the printer... and if anyone can crack into my computer via the printer deserves being in my computer.

I have never really liked the media much. I read slashdot and wired but only really read the comics (probably the only good and true thing in the entire paper). They started the Spanish American war (the paper is the one that reported a US ship was blown up by the Spanish to increase sales - - it wasn't blwn up by the Spanish. In fact, it wasn't blown up) and they never take responsibility for their actions. Blaming it on the net is very lame.
