the only reason software companies do anything in regards to packaging is because it works. If the consumer wants to see hot babes on the front of the box and the mfg would sell more with hot babes on the front... you know what would be on the front of the boxes from now on...
The only way to get companies to make more environmentally friendly packaging is to vote with your pocketbook...and that means not buying the software.
Perhaps the best way around this would be the kiosks you see from some software manufacturers... the cardboard displays that are human-sized, but would hold software in the smallest possible box.

if i rent a movie (even a technology-related one) and wrote a review on my web site, it'd hardly be something that slashdot would think worthy of linking to.
i downloaded a copy of tron w/ gnutella once, and it was ok. is that worthwhile?
maybe i'm missing something here, but what multi player PS games are available currently? and who's going to write more with the PS2 coming out so soon?
if you can place a toll free call from the ship, pocketmail might be just the thing. I've used their devices in canada before, and they worked fine. I'm not sure what the policies are with toll free calls from a cruise ship, but it might work.
